This is a large pewter plate by one of the finest families ... morethat manufactured American pewter. This pewter plate has a single reeded rim and shows good manufacture. The plate has a part of two impressed eagle marks. Both marks are worn and hard to read, but one can clearly recognize the "W", above the stars and eagle. There is also a "D" that can still be read below the eagle mark to the left. This would mean there is the name "WILLIAM", above the eagle and "DANFORTH", below the eagle. The second mark appearsto have a part of the name "DANFORTH" below the eagle. These marks are listed in "A Guide To American Pewter" by Carl Jacobs, mark number 122, page 81-82; where an 8" plate with this mark was valued at $65 back in 1957.

The plates are rare examples by a maker I had never been able to offer for sale before coming across a few in a recent lot I was able to purchase. One plate is marked on the back rim with the distinctive mark of Jonas Durand who worked out of London from 1732 to 1775. The second plate has a worn impressed mark in the center of the back. This plate was purchased on Charles Street in Boston on May 22, 1967. The first plate with the maker's mark, that mark can be found in Cotterrell mark# 1475. Note the medallions on the opposite sides of this plate. Measures 8 1/2" in diameter. The well measures 5 1/2 inches in diameter. Condition is great as there are NO dents. Cracks, pitting or repairs present. There are natural scratches in the well. Marked on the bottom“Kayserzinn 4786” Dates to the turnoff the century. Antique Pewter 8 3/4" plate American or English
Early plate just a hair under 8.75 inches across Unique and rare it is a very shallow plate under 1/2 inch Here is what I can say about this plate. While it has a tag that says American Henry Will which would place the plate as being made in the late 1700s. While it does have the characteristics of American make of that age. I cannot guarantee that it is a Will because the one reference I have on H Will marks does not seem to match although he did make 8.75" plates- as did other early American makers. Note the condition. Crack and hole in middle, bite" off rim, typical scratches and some light knife marks. Fine scratching all around the edge- almost seems like it was done on purpose to be decorative? Nice dark patina but not pitting through at all. About the marks- they are very faint. There looks to be the typical 4 small marks(sorry ... morecamera cannot do anything more to pick them up) The first looks to be a bird or eagle with wings spread. Second and third show a little but too far gone to venture a guess. Fourth could be the tops of initials. There may be a large touch that may be a lion rampant- but to be fair maybe I have my mind wanting some wear pattern to look like a touch- it is quite faint. So the markings are consistent with American make. But also with English makers. The booge is veryshallow and does not look to be hammered. Plate bottom has incribed circle line as do many American plates. So there it is. Issues but still very nice piece of pewter- and if you are better at identifying marks than I am, mabe you will find it to be as rare as I suspect. I have some other pewter listed. This is a vintage antique pewter plate that was purchased at an antique shop in Viterbo. Italy in 1987. It has fluted triple reeded wavy edges. It measures 7" across. It is in good vintage condition with normal scratches for its age. There is a small ding on the rim about 1" in from the edge. The hall mark or touch mark is almost gone. You can see a number that looks like 182 and below that what appears to be a shape of a triangle or hour glass and possibly letters but it is too worn for me to determine what it says. ~~ Thank you for looking. ~~. It has a dragon centered below a Fleur de Lis French crown. There is a lovely border around them with what look to be acanthus leaves and some sort of heraldry. The outer rim is adorned with leaves. The pewter plate has both the European CROWN& ROSETTE Quality Mark plus the ANGEL. Commonly used as a Quality Mark in France and the European countries. The piece has some blemishes but is in beautiful condition for its age. The HEDGEHOG with CROWN was the personal emblem of Louis XII. This piece could have been part of the Royal household pewter plate of LOUIS XII when he occupied the Loire Valley. Louis XII became king in 1498 he moved the entire royal residence to the Chateau de Blois. This plate has a nice single reeded wide rim and a turned body. The plate is marked"George Grenfell" in one impressed mark and a second worn impressed mark reads"Grace Church Street London" Both of these marks are at least partially worn but can be seen in the photos within this description. These marks can be found in"OLD PEWTER. ITS MAKERS AND MARKS" PAGE 220, 1994. This is a very fine example of a very early pewter plate offered with no reserve. One reads SUPER FINE HARD METAL. There is a crowned"x" and I can not make out the last one. There is a hinged opening for filling this plate up with hot water to keep the food warm. The plate has a diameter 7 15/16" is 10 1/8" from handle to handle, and stands 1 1/2" in height. The plate is in great condition with just some minor pitting to the bottom and some light utensil marks to the surface.
