Old Antique Heavy Cast Lead, Bronze or Brass Wash Horse Figure Doorstop Bookend
Here's an interesting old or antique mystery item we don't know too much about. It is clearly very old and has acquired a very nice darkened aged appearance. Our best guess is that this is a doorstop and less likely but possibly was a bookend. It is made of thickly casted metal we think is probably lead or a lead alloy with a bronze or brass finish. Wash or plate. At one time it has a bottom piece hand soldered to it that probably stabilized it better for it's intended use. The piece still stands very well for use as a doorstop or decorative knick knack. It is about 7 inches tall about 4.5 inches wide and about 1.125 inches thick at the base. Item can be found in Cast Iron Collector's Guides. This is from an unknown USA Foundry. I think it has the air of Art Deco within the shape of its raised tail mechanics. The Boston Terrier Button you will notice in one of the pictures is a magnet- which is a simple test to assure you that it is indeed cast iron. There is no structure damage that I noticed during inspection but please use the zoom tool to be double sure I have not overlooked anything important or unimportant in my observations. Completely stable, meaning, no parts are missing or have ever been glued back on and there is no evidence cracks, breaks, replacement, or repair to my eye. In my professional opinion there may be slight possibility that the screw was replaced sometime in the 1940's- this is just a guess on my part since it is a small dome head vs flat- but maybe not since the poly-chrome paint is a perfect match on the screw. Finish is appropriate as well as texture for a makers typical materials; Paint or Patina is guaranteed to be 1st original finish. Uncommon Antique Solid Cast Iron Small Size Heavy Doorstop Beautiful Puppy Dog For Your Antique Cast Iron Doorstop Collection. Details Description: Antique heavy(3 pounds and 9 Ounces) but rather small in size(5 1/2" long and 4 1/2" high) cast iron doorstop. the doorstop is cast in the form of a cute puppy(not certain of the breed) dog. The puppy is standing on all four with its head turned left towards you. The puppy has a very muscular body suggesting possibly some sort of a bull dog but has a much cuter face and droopy ears suggesting possibly another breed? Its head is straight looking and its ears are drooped over its head. The dog is colored in cream off-white and black colors. The details of the dog's face are very well cast so you can see its eyes. And mouth in red. Look at the wrinkles around the eyes and nose. The ... morepuppy is wearing a red studded collar around its neck and has a short tail. The doorstop is made of one piece of solid of cast iron and as such is completely solid and rather heavy for its size. The piece appears to be all original but has lost quite a bit of its original paint. This however does not affect its looks but rather gives it great character. Again, this is a smaller size doorstop than you would normally see, but has the weight to stop any door you may think of. We have attempted to research this doorstop but were unable to identify any similar doorstop in our books or the internet, which leads us to conclude that this is a rather unusual or uncommon piece. Please view photos as they are part and parcel of the description. Date: Uncertain. But most likely early to mid 1900s Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania. I purchased 2 Old Door Stops at an Estate/Moving Sale. I was told by the older Gentleman(75 ish) that the 2 door stops had always been in his grandmothers house and when he was a child he would play with them and hurt his toes when he would accidentally hit them while barefoot. I am not a collector of Old Door Stops I just couldn't resist them at the time. Bull dog is in as found condition. I did not try to clean him, I didn't want to disturb the finish, he looks like he could use a bath. He stands 10" in height and 8 1/2" in length. He is a heavy 8 lbs. Cast iron branch with leaves and acorns. They measure 20 1/2" by about 10" I am not sure what these are for. I bought them at an auction a few years ago and planned on having them attached as a decorative item under a small roof with these going down from the roof to the house. I am not sure what you call them. I am finally having some work done at the house but these are not going to work after all. They are both the exact same and I would need opposite sides painted. Unfortunately. The opposite side is the backside of the leaf- so it will not work. Buyer will pay shg/ins. of $40.00. I did a little research and the Angel could be referred to as the Angel of Death. Paint does have some wear and tear. There is a glued on piece of green felt on the bottom and am pretty sure it is not original to the piece. I was unable to find a makers mark. My best guess is there might be one on the bottom of the piece. This might be a true collectors piece! If not, with as heavy as it is, it is going to keep pretty much any door open! Up for auction is this really cool bookend set from Bradley and Hubbard. They depict a three masted sailing vessel in rough seas. The detail on these is awesome.
