Antique Yugoslavian Repousse Copper Art. Traditional Woman & Folk Dancers.
These two copper repousse pieces are from Yugoslavia and are from the mid-20th century. They came from the estate of American historian. And Antioch College professor, Irwin Abrams(1914-2010) who traveled extensively. Abrams, a Quaker and World War Two conscientious objector, was known as perhaps the foremost authority on the Nobel Peace Prize. Including the frames, the folk dancers measures about 16" by 11" and the woman measures about 10" by 6" The writing below the folk dancers is"Narodne Igre Jugoslavia. The burlap fabric backing is worn and discolored. The frame of the traditional woman is loose. Still, they are fine pieces and remind me of a traditional, almost medieval, way of European life.

As you can see the formation of the design is a donkey,a rural form, undoubtably done in homage to the farm animal. Flint strikers were used with small amounts of tinder to create a flame. A piece of flint would have grazed the underside steel edge. Most commonly strikers are a"C" or oval shape. But on occasion, one is lucky enough to uncover a figural example. This particular one was recently purchased out of a collection of early ironware assembled over thirty years ago. This is made out of Iron Plates. Not sure if it falls under cast iron or not. I'm sure it is a one of a kind home made item as it is very crude made. It would look nice in an old rustic cabin. I think it was used with a candle inside so the smoke comes out the chimney or it could be a bird feeder or it could be a change holder, toss the penny's down the chimney type of thing. And was determined by its design details. To be of Scandinavian(possibly Swedish) origin. This Coffee Kettle is in very nice antique condition with dings. Dents, and discoloration commensurate with its age. It has also acquired a rich patina(photos 1-5) This Coffee Kettle has a Lift-off Lid with a curled finial handle attached by a rivet(photo 6) The copper handle flanges are also attached by hand-crafted copper rivets(photo 7) The seam that joins the body of the kettle together in the back is dove-tailed.
