I am offering this amazing Gorham Foundry bronze tray c. 1880s. The tray is silverplated with bronze overlay. And has an incredibly detailed raised design with a background of trees and a fierce lion gowling menacingly over what I believe may be a stylized stub of a cigar with swirling smoke, hinting to the tray's usage. The piece is marked with Gorham Foundry's mark on the reverse, with an anchor in a pentagonal cartouche and GORHAM MFG CO. along with the model number O11-see photo for detail. The reverse also shows the silverplate underneath the bronze. The pieces have curved corners where the cigar rests. The piece is in great condition; there is no wear to the bronze on the front and it has the original patina; there are no scratches or dents. 19th C. Gilt Bronze Calling Card Tray; Dionysus , Levillain, Barbedienne
Offered at auction is a 19 th century calling card tray made by the premier French Bronze foundry Barbedienne and designed by the sculpture Ferdinand Leveillain. This tray is cast from bronze and has a gilt surface. The subject depicted on the central plaque of the tray is classical in nature and seems. In my opinion, to have a Dionysic theme. I am not totally familiar with all the adventures of the Greek god Dionysus but this tableau seems to depict the young Dionysus, reclining beneath grape vines, being attacked by a hydra and being defended by two male devotees. That the reclining individual is Dionysus(Bacchus in the Roman world) is indicated by the grape arbor, the leopard skin he is laying on and his thyrsus staff lying beside his couch, all attributes indicating the identification of the young god. Around the central plaque are repetitive ... moredepictions of grape leaves reinforcing the theme of the central plaque. The tray is cast in bronze and stands 1 1/8 inches tall at its lip and is 7 5/8 inches long by 5 ¾ wide. The condition of this tray is quite good with the little wear to the low relief sculpture that Levillain was well known for. The front of the tray has a gilt surface that has been partially restored to its original look showing only a few dark spots and some gilt loss. The unseen back of the tray still has some gilt surface but also has loss to its gilding around its edges. The central plaque is signed by Levillain at the lower right and the back of the tray has the standard engraved mark of the Barbedienne foundry. This is a possible grand tour item. This is a nice antique tray and would look good on a desk or table for the receipt or dispensing of calling cards. This tray should be of interest to any collector of neo-classical art or to anyone involved with wine and enology given that the Dionysus was the giver of the knowledge of wine to mankind. Antique E Jullien/Paris (1880-1900) French Gilt Bronze Tray/Dish/Valet
This is a beautiful antique french gilt bronze that was made by the E Jullien Foundry in Paris between the years of 1880 and 1900. The foundry was only active then. There is a mark engraved on the bottom that says"E Jullien/Paris/12 Rue Pasquier. I have already mentioned the flaws- the gilt is missing from most of the woman's body. There are some nicks and scratches, but it is still very beautiful. I find especially charming the fact that the woman's hair goes down the side of the dish, and you can also see her arm resting there from the side. I am selling this for a friend(this belonged to her aunt) And neither of us know anything about antiques, but I did look up the foundry and found some very good prices for the objects made there. It is approx imately 5 1/2" long by 3 1/4" wide. And weighs 15 ounces. I haven't ... moretried to clean it. This circa 1880 possibly older Gilded Bronze FOOTED TRAY has a border in crisp relief showing an abundance of French Country folks chatting, drinking from mugs, on horseback, reaping, and loading kegs onto a wagon, all entwined with vines. There is a bit of wear due to age in the center which shows the bronze color which looks like copper but I do believe it to be bronze although it could be copper. There is also a very slight visible ring in the center probably from something that was set on it. I have not tried to polish this out. Measuring 9.25" top-to-bottom and 13.25" in length. Tray measures approx. 6" x 4" x 2" It's a great and not-often-seen piece of American History! The Russell& Erwin Co. at one time was New Britain. Connecticut's largest hardware producer, and were quite famous for their work. This piece has often been copied, but none are ever quite as good as the original! Condition: Pretty much as described at the top of the listing page. It does have some of the original red paint. But some is also worn off. It has a great patina, with a few green oxidation markings on the back and on the left elbow. Not sure of an exact date of origin, but I would imagine this dates from the 19th Century. The tray is in good shape with a nice patina and only minor signs of wear. It has not been polished. This is an absolutely stunning Austrian bronze tray featuring a parade of elephants. The tray is done with exceptional detail and shows four elephants gathered together. The elephants are done in relief so they come up off the bottom of the tray(and there is a corresponding hollow on the back of the tray) There is slight wear and residue in keeping with its age. I am unsure of the exact age of this tray and so will leave that up the experts to determine. This tray dates to the late 1800s and is a gold gilt over heavy brass or bronze. This tray measures 12" handle to handle and is 6" wide.
