Influenced by an artistic family background, he began sculpting at the age of seventeen. After apprenticing with several accomplished sculptors both in America and Spain, he began his own work focusing equally on steel and bronze. Horses and other animals were a natural direction of his work to follow. Surrounded by horses as a child and witnessing the fighting bulls of Spain gave him an instinct for the inherent drama of these animals. Combining a special cement mixture with steel has allowed him the fluidity of ... moremetal with the timelessness of stone. This process enables him to capture the essence of the animal's nature. BIO: The French sculptor Clodion(1738-1814) is best known for small terra-cotta groups in the rococo style, depicting nymphs and fauns in an erotic and playful manner. Clodion. Whose real name was Claude Michel, was born in Nancy on Dec. 20, 1738, into a family of sculptors. He studied with his uncle, Lambert Sigisbert Adam, a prominent sculptor whose work was significant in transforming the vigorous and dynamic baroque style into the more delicate rococo. Clodion also ... moreworked with the famous rococo sculptor Jean Baptiste Pigalle. In 1759 the Royal Academy awarded Clodion the Grand Prize for Sculpture, and he was in Rome between 1762 and 1771. In 1773 he became a member of the academy. He created his most important works during the 1770s and 1780s. Clodion possessed great technical virtuosity and executed many types of sculpture in a variety of media. During the 1770s he completed two important commissions for the Cathedral of Rouen: the marble St. Cecilia and the bronze Crucified Christ. In 1779 the royal government commissioned him to produce a monumental statue of the Baron de Montesquieu. One of the leading philosophers of the Enlightenment. This marble statue shows the subject seated in a chair and wearing an impressive judge's robe. It is in no way formal or solemn, however, but is a sprightly and vibrant image of one of the most clever intellectuals of the time. Clodion is most noted for small. Intimate terra-cotta sculptures or statuettes of nymphs, fauns, satyrs, and bacchantes, mythological creatures symbolic of erotic pleasure. Such works as the Intoxication of Wine(Nymph and Satyr) and Seated Bacchante Playing with a Child ar

Bronze Dimensions:Height 10 1/2" x Width 5" Weight: 6 LBS Inventory: 12X11513321 This original Marco Polo Piece will always be an amazing work of heart. Some years before St. Louis led his last Crusade there was born in Venice a boy named Marco Polo. His father was a wealthy merchant who often went on trading journeys to distant lands. In 1271. When Marco was seventeen years old, he accompanied his father and uncle on a journey through the Holy Land, Persia and Tartary, and at length to the Empire of China-then called Cathay. It took the travelers three years to reach Cathay. The emperor of Cathay was a monarch named Kublai Khan, who lived in Peking. Marco's father and uncle had been in ... moreCathay once before and had entertained Kublai Khan by telling him about the manners and customs of Europe. So when the two Venetian merchants again appeared in Peking, Kublai Khan was glad to see them. He was also greatly pleased with the young Marco, whom he invited to the palace. Important positions at the Chinese court were given to Marco's father and uncle, and so they and Marco lived in the country for some years. Marco studied the Chinese language, and it was not very long before he could speak it. When he was about twenty-one Kublai Khan sent him on very important business to a distant part of China. He did the work well and from that time was often employed as an envoy of the Chinese monarch. His travels were sometimes in lands never before visited by Europeans and he had many strange adventures among the almost unknown tribes of Asia. Step by step he was promoted. For several years he was governor of a great Chinese city. This sculpture was cast using the"Lost Wax Method" and is 100% bronze. This sculpture is signed by the artist Thomas. It has a gorgeous dark brown patina. This important and well known sculpture would look excellent on. Book shelves, or

French Art Nouveau Bronze Nude Sculpture Statue Austria Signed Stamped
AUSTRIA SIGNED ART NOUVEAU BRONZE NUDE*DESCRIPTION* Very interesting sculpture/figurine. Marked and stamped AUSTRIA with a captiopal A with a circle around it. Lovely lady sitting in a chair looking up into an empty glass. Her dress is removable to reveal a beautiful nude with thigh high stockings typical of the early 1900 late 1800 Victorian period. I have done a lot of research on this sculpture and n]believe it to be in the style of Franz Bergmann. In addiction to her nice composition there is a very small hole in the groin area and when you turn the sculpture over there is a small threading where it might have screwed on to another additional piece. Possibly a part of a table fountain or an ink well? This piece is just lovely and very interesting and seems to be very rare as I have spent COUNTLESS HOURS trying to discover the origin/maker. ... moreIf you have any information I would be happy to hear from you, also no reasonable offer will be refused.
