Antique Bradley Hubbard Brass Napkin Letter Holder
Up for sale is what appears to be a Bradley& Hubbard Letter Holder with an Angel/Cherub Theme. It has a shiny gilt brass finish. It is designed with latticework and cherubs in a design that I think could be described as Art Nouveau as well as Victorian. I am unsure as it it's exact age but I estimate it to be from the late 1800's or early 1900's. It is in very good vintage condition. Some of the finish has worn over the years but I don't believe it has been cleaned. It has a beautiful aged patina. A magnificent and unusual pair of postal scales created from hefty cast solid English brass. Unmarked by the manufacturer but undoubtedly would have been made in one of the Birmingham foundry's, around 1890. The shaped weight holder is most unusual, crowing the top of the scales, lined in the original leather and complete with set of weights including the litter topper. The pattern reminds me of a graceful and delicate butterfly in flight, which is remarkable considering that it is made of heavy cast iron. It measures 9 1/2" wide. About 7" tall and 5 1/2" deep. There is wear to the brass finish- as you would expect from a piece 128 years old-but no dents or damage. This letter holder could easily double as an exquisite napkin holder. This is a beautiful filigree vintage two tiered letter holder caddy in very nice vintage condition. It has a beautiful scalloped shell shaped tray in the front for paperclips. Stamps, change or keys, etc. The panels are highly decorated with what seems to be mythological creatures with wings and a tail, on the ends with scrolling and a floral theme in the middle of each panel. This is a late 19th century folding letter carrier. It is brass with hand hammered designs. It has"Austria" marked on back edge. I come from England and it has been in my family for ever. We have not cleaned it so it has its own original patina and looks very good. The bottom tray opens to reveal three sections for stamps. I have shown the underside and it is marked D.R.G.M. 237670 which is the German patent number and GES.GESCH(gesetzlich geschutzt) which mean protected by law. Antique Brass Letter or File Holder Made of Brass and decorated on both front and back with leaves and vines in an open. Airy pattern. Both front and back pieces are topped with a scallop and embellished with an oval button towards the bottom. The center section is has an open oval cameo or portrait frame design at the highest point and the leaves and vines design continues to a braided border design before opening into two framed open squares. The letter holder is about 7.75 inches high at its highest point(the center piece) and 6 inches high at the front and back pieces. It is 9.5 inches wide. There is about 1.50 inches of space on both sides(front and back) to fill with letters. Files or what you will. The space is wider at the bottom and tapers towards the top. Use it on your table to hold napkins or serviettes. The inside base of the ... moreholder is a smooth brass piece with two round open cut outs(it reminds us of an electric switchplate. Beyond the plate- on either side- is a 1.5 inch embellishment which also has that same button design. Four"feet" about 1.5 inches long support the holder. The same braided design is on the bottom plate above the feet. The underside base of the holder is very bright and is stamped B&H 3559& 7039. Six(6) very bright brass screws are visible on the underside and hold the components together. Based on the B&H logo. This item may be brass plate over cast iron. There are some brighter and darker areas to this piece. The bottom is very bright. There are some teeny black dots on the smooth bottom plate and some areas of vines and leaves appear black. It hard to tell whether there is some pitting or whether that was the original production molding of the piece caused some teeny voids which look like pits. The manufacturer. Bradley and Hubbard began business in 1852 as Bradley, Hatch and Company in Meridien, Connecticutt. Antique Early 1900's Heavy Brass Letter Holder w/ Cherubs; Perfect Beauty
This is a magnificent ornate older piece from England dating back to the early 1900's. The letter holder is very well made. Large and quite heavy. It is beautifully designed with cherubs on both sides, and one cherub at the top. The condition is very good with no flaws or defects, despite its great age. There is some oxidation on the bottom, otherwise, it looks great. Also on the bottom, the number 2108, and a crown hallmark(photos 7& 8) There are 2 brass panels with which to store the letters, one taller than the other. The base/stand of the piece is 8 and a 1/2 in wide, and the height is 5 and a 1/2 in in front, and 7 and 3/4 in in the rear(photos 9,10, 12) The sides are approximately 3 in, and the weight is just under 3 pounds.
