Antique E Jullien/Paris (1880-1900) French Gilt Bronze Tray/Dish/Valet
This is a beautiful antique french gilt bronze that was made by the E Jullien Foundry in Paris between the years of 1880 and 1900. The foundry was only active then. There is a mark engraved on the bottom that says"E Jullien/Paris/12 Rue Pasquier. I have already mentioned the flaws- the gilt is missing from most of the woman's body. There are some nicks and scratches, but it is still very beautiful. I find especially charming the fact that the woman's hair goes down the side of the dish, and you can also see her arm resting there from the side. I am selling this for a friend(this belonged to her aunt) And neither of us know anything about antiques, but I did look up the foundry and found some very good prices for the objects made there. It is approx imately 5 1/2" long by 3 1/4" wide. And weighs 15 ounces. I haven't ... moretried to clean it. Measurements: length of base is 2 1/4 inches. Width of base a little over 1 3/4 inches. Height is a little under 6 3/4 inches. Description: rectangular base with canted corners. Magnificent shades of blue with lacy bands shading from white through an almost transparent series of bands. Blues from bright through to deep navy. A gilt bronze(ormolu) pillar is set in the center of the agate. Leading to a horizontal bar with at least 7 hooks on it, the central one, for a pocket watch and the others for a variety of jewels and trinkets. This listing is for an antique. Circa 1860s French bronze of the Greek god Zeus holding his son Dionysus also called Bacchus. The bronze sits on a two color marble base which in turn sits on a carved wood base. The whole measures just over 17 inches high at 43 cm. The bronze itself measures just under 13 inches tall at 32 cm. The bronze depicts a very handsome Zeus dressed in his lion headed wrap holding his naked equally handsome young son in his arms. The detail on this bronze is exceptional and so is the finish. The finish is in it's original ormolu gilt gold. This finish is bright and all original. This ormolu gold finish was made by mixing pure gold into liquid mercury. This mixture was applied to the bronze and heated evaporating the mercury and leaving the gold adhered to the surface of the bronze) The bronze sits on a red and ... moreblack stepped base. This marble insets into a carved enameled black wood base and is held to the base by studs and nuts. There is a jut out at the back of the wood base where it looks like there was a lamp rod attached to the wood at one time. The bronze and marble are in excellent and all original condition. Fine Antique Gilt Bronze Sculpture of an Arab Maiden by Leon Pilet
Leon Pilet(1836-1916) was a well known and highly esteemed French sculptor. He exhibited in the famous French Salon from 1861 to 1914. He won several prizes. This finely detailed bronze sculpture of a young possibly Nubian woman is standing on an oval gilt bronze base that is engraved with the artist’s name and decorated in rug like motifs. The details of her robe are finely rendered as are her fingers and extremities. She is holding a scimitar in her right hand. This arm has some movement to it; this is expected as these bronzes were not cast as one piece. The gilding and the bronze are in very good condition. We presume this sculpture dates to the second half of the 19th century. Base 6 1/2" x 4 7/8" 13 1/4" Tall. LLEST.

Up for auction is a beautiful antique 19th century French bronze ormolu cherub mounted to a marble base. This would have probably gone onto a lamp base or casket box. There are two exposed screws on the bottom of the marble. Very fine. Exquisite detail, down to the individual feathers and floral headband. Winged cupid is playing an aulos. In very good condition with one half of the double pipe is missing, looks like a stress fracture to the wing which does not appear to go all the way around, repair to the marble on the back side. Antique French Empire Gilt Bronze Neoclassical Statues Greek Muse of History& Writing ~ Clio ~ ~* ~ Scarce and very hard-to-find pair of gilt bronze statues mounted on exquisite granite marble bases with bronze bead trim and original four gilt bronze bun feet on the bottom of each ~ from France in the 2nd quarter of the 19th Century(1825- 1850) and from the personal family collection. So these have not seen the market in a very long time ~ Fantastic and very detailed casting work on both figures and are cast in separate pieces. For example her downward arm holding the wreath and his front advancing leg are separate pieces, as are the torso upper and lower garment portion. ~* ~ Special Notes: Further research indicates that this is the French 19th Century sculptor's clever gender ~ bending play on the Greek Muse Clio, the Muse of History ... moreand Writing. And that this represents the Male and Female Aspects of History. The symbols for Clio are the Wreath of Victory and the Scroll ~ look at the items these two bronzes are holding. the French sculptor also"modernized" them and made them relatable by keeping the Old World symbols of Wreath and Scroll. But gave them"modern" bound books that they are looking at. Of course, the Ancient Greeks only knew scrolls and tablets, not the modern bound book that the French of the Empire period were making History in and of. The number 9 is most closely associated with the Muses. As there were 9 of them, and the female bronze of this pair bears 9 flowers in her hair. ~* ~ The Condition of each is Wonderful and Excellent ~ no problems with the bronzes save for some very minor spots of aging to the gilt gold finish ~ Each statue has a small corner nibble on the back of the marble base. Not major and you really can't see them because they're in the back and the just disappear(see photos 7& 8) ~ a few of the nuts on the bottom seem to have been replaced a long time ago. Perhaps the old ones wore out.but both figures are solid and tight on the bases
