T he lock is period to the time. As would be the nails and wooden pegs used. No key for the lock though. The trunk is solidly built with the hand forged metal plates reinforc ing sides and top. Circa 1680, believed to be from the Westmorland area of the Lake District(northern counties) This type of cupboard was typically used for storing kitchen utensils and food. The detachable top consists of a recessed carved floral lunette freeze and two turned pillars, which surround three further floral lunette panels with moulded edges, two of which are working doors. These two doors feature a working lock and key. The base cupboards have feature similar carved floral lunettes to the top section and below; there are two inset moulded door panels. The base cupboard doors also feature a working lock& key and a later brass knob. Inside, the lower cupboard is a fixed height shelf. The cupboard frame and doors have been constructed in the original pegged construction method and feature a reeded frame to the carcass and feet. The form is striking with it's clean symmetry and airy lines, the bowing of the front accentuated by the fine flare of the feet. This chest has seen some noteworthy restoration over the years, so while it is not an ideal selection for the purist, it is a very handsome object for most collectors and those that just enjoy a beautiful piece for what it is. At some point, someone reduced the height of the feet, probably as it was just slightly too high for either the ... morespace or the owner- this was restored by crafting new facings, the original blocking still retained inside of the feet. It is the only proper way to restore that kind of unfortunate decision, and the result is actually quite wonderful- the feet have life and blend flawlessly with the case. The back of the case is signed in pitch"W G Roberts, Rockville, MD" this then outlined in chalk(presumably by a later owner) but we are not certain the backboards are original to the case as there is evidence of mid-19th Century craftsmanship on at least one of the boards. The case enjoys the highly recognizable Maryland diamond inlay around the base. For the collector or anyone passionate about American antiques and furniture who doesn't require total untouched originality in objects of their collection. The restoration of this chest of drawers is honest and necessary in light of life and use. It is a beautiful chest, the surface early and with great character, while also being a highly functional piece with smooth sliding graduated drawers. This fine Pennsylvania Tall Chest of Drawers exhibits the classical architecture of the Chippendale era adapted for the Neoclassical taste of the early 19th Century. Retaining it's original oval pulls, these with roses embossed inside an infinite double loop and entirely untouched feet, this is a particularly desirable object for collectors. The concave crown molding is bold, aggressively projecting over the unembellished case of three small drawers over five graduated full drawers. The sides of the case extend through the feet, making the interior blocking of the feet an integral part of the case and something permanent- much of the reason the feet have survived in such extraordinary ... morecondition. The backboards are untouched and typical of the period with neat rows of square forged iron nails affixing the backboards to the case. Each drawer is of fine craftsmanship. The tidy hand dovetails crisp and perfect, the pine plank bottoms chamfered on the sides and front to be set in grooves along these edges; all drawers are tacked at the back edge with three hand forged nails. Protecting the contents of one drawer is a full dust board, the other drawers with partial dust boards over the first one-third. Flanking the drawers are the deeply fluted Corinthian columns with turned bases and caps so commonly found in chests of this region. As a well preserved and absolutely stunning object of Early Pennsylvania. Particularly interesting for the meld of Federal and Chippendale designs and it's very fine craftsmanship, this is an outstanding investment grade work of art that was built to last and if well cared for will last long beyond our lifetimes. AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE WALNUT CHEST OF DRAWERS OVER OGEE FEET Pennsylvania c. 1790 Item# 410QNP11W A bold and impressive object. This fine American Chippendale Tall Chest of Drawers originates in southeastern Pennsylvania, possibly the Delaware River Valley. The craftsmanship is impeccable, the cabinetmaker choosing vivid walnut planks carefully to showcase the most important and striking aspects of the chest. Note in particular the wonderful flowing grains along the sides of the case, the overall horizontal flow of the grain along the front of the drawers lapsing in random swirls and burls of the plank. The case is crested by cove molding projecting over three small drawers, two medium drawers and four broad drawers- all carefully graduated to flow harmoniously together. Noteworthy are the two drawers with patches, not unusual for these cases ... morewith overhanging lips on the drawers- these are particularly susceptible to being damaged when a drawer is closed unevenly or too harshly, as is probably the case with one or both of these drawers. The repairs were done rather competently, the restorer having to carefully choose boards with at least as much figure as the neighboring parts of the drawers. The drawers are embellished with replaced pierced brass hardware. The frames handsomely dovetailed white pine with integral runners mitered to accept the chamfered white pine bottom, mostly crafted of a single huge plank of pine, this tacked along the back edge with iron nails. The drawers are flanked by fluted corinthian columns with turned caps and bases, the whole case resting over very striking and significant ogival feet. They project an unusual sense of strength and masculinity, each with soft scroll cut returns and resting over thin blades. The back of the case shows the simple and tidy construction we expect from the best craftsmen of this region, the triangular rear foot supports dovetailed into the facings for a permanent joint. The two plate racks feature the original plate rail beading, which ensures that the plates on display do not slide off the rack. 1800's Antique Sewing Spool Cabinet with 8 drawers. 3 of the drawers have dividers. The other 5 are full size drawers. The cabinet itself stands 40" tall x 30 1/4" wide. 21 1/8" from back to front. The inside measurements of each drawer are 3 3/8" deep. 25 1/2" wide x 18" from back to front Has Victorian Drawer Pulls- the original hardware. There are some nicks and scratches on the top. As expected on a piece that is this old. We believe it is Mahogany or Chestnut. It is a very nice. Heavy piece of furniture from the 1870's. This transitional dresser which originates from the counties of Shropshire/ Staffordshire, is constructed in an unusual and rare design and boasts a lovely mellow original golden oak colour. The dresser base features four narrow spice drawers above a single piece oak top, which is finished off with a double moulded lip. To the centre of the dresser, there an unusual arched dome door, which is flanked by two large drawers. The arched door boasts a working lock and key and features its original brass knob. Description Fine 18th century highboy with beautiful burl walnut veneer and cabriole legs ending in club feet. Made in New England. Torus molding below the cornice is the front to a hidden drawer. This is an earlier highboy and was made circa in 1725-1750. Provenance: Northeast Auctions. Portsmouth, NH. Dimensions 69 inches high. 22 inches wide, and about 18.5 inches deep. 69x22x38 Condition The condition of the highboy is very good for its age. It is structurally sound with nice color. The are some places where small amounts of the veneer is missing(see photos) But this is normal for a pieces of this age and I don't believe it takes away from its appearance. Also, the molding on the left side of the upper right small drawer is missing. I have just ignored this, but if it bothers you it would be an easy fix. This is a common repair when the brass hardware have been changed. The feet have been repaired over the years. Mainly due to the feet facias being repaired. The feet are 100% original in our opinion. Antique American Chippendale Walnut Tall Chest of Drawers. York County, Pa 1780s York County. PA circa 1780-1800 Very nice and striking chest of drawers. Good size and drawer arrangement. Solid walnut with pine secondary wood construction. 3 over 2 over 4 lip moulded drawers. A desirable configuration. All drawers are dovetailed, with hand chamfered drawer bottoms, and yellow pine secondary woods. The cornice moulding is the original. As well as all of the interior drawer slides and back boards. The surface is a 1920-1930's refinish. It has mellowed over the years and looks pleasing. One might consider this a"mid-case" since it's only 58 1/2" tall. It measures 6 feet wide, 9.5 feet high and 16.5 inches deep. It features a shelved superstructure above rectangular surface fitted with 2 drawers on turned supports. The top is flat with a molded cornice, and the valance features a unique pierced interloop carved motif. Four grooved plate shelves. Lower section has a molded edge top over two half-width frieze drawers with old brasses which are not original. This section has a valanced apron on three baluster posts over a base shelf supported by block feet. Brasses are no original. The looping design of the frieze and the pierced apron are characteristic of dressers from the county ... moreof Shropshire in the West Midlands, just east of Wales. Walnut with inlaid satinwood and mahogany banding and burl panels, the finish is in excellent condition, preserving stains, losses and shrinkage separations for antique character. Every surface is hand planed. There are warps, shrinkage and uneven spots from age. Deep drawers have hand cut dovetail joints and chamfered bottoms. Carved wooden pegs and hand cut nails are visible. Large iron locks still work on this historic European furniture. Embossed brasses appear original. The base was rebuilt perhaps a century ago. There is 2 very old lead nails in the front stiles, they quite puzzle us. Appears to retain the original numbered brasses. The Thumb moulded top in our opinion is a replacement.

Original brass hardware and a nice old finish. There is one central drawer flanked by two side drawers, plus a pull out brushing slide. all over elegant Queen Anne legs with pad feet. The lowboy is 41 1/2" wide by 21" deep by 32 1/2" high. In very good condition. No major repairs or restorations and sturdy. Some warping of the wood here and there commiserate with age.
