Possibly a pulp paper.The map and the matting both have some browning with age. The matting has age spots all over it. The frame measures 19.5 by 15.5 inches. I can't put an exact age on the reproduction or the frame, but the backer board is a really old heavy piece of cardboard. It was attached with teeny tiny rusty nails. The hanger appears to have been replaced.

At least three of them prior to 1900. Only a couple of maps are dated in the1950s; a handful are from the 30's or 40's. These are maps that once belonged to the Geography Department of Boston University. According to the auctioneer, this was part of a huge hoard of material found in a Wellesley, Massachusetts, house. Please see the list below. Most of the maps are stamped"Property of Geography Department Boston University. A few are marked as belonging to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology library. At least a couple are embossed with"Appalachian Mountain Club Boston. Most have a pencilled"13J" in the corner. Scale is 1:62.500, so ... morean inch on the map is about a mile on the ground. The contour interval is 20 feet on some maps, 50 feet on others. All the tight contour lines on these maps makes it easy to understand why roads in West Virginia are so crooked. Size of the map sheets varies a little but is mostly 16 by 20 inches or a little larger. Condition is generally very good. There is a little soiling. Short edge tears, and minor chipping. Except for a couple of slightly oversized maps, there are no folds or creases. It appears that the maps have been stored flat for most of the past century. The reverse of many of the maps has a lengthy description of the ongoing effort by the US Geological Survey to create a topographical atlas of the United States. As well as a listing of about 60 symbols used on these maps to depict features relating to culture(manmade objects, political boundaries, etc) relief, water, or woods. One of the symbols I see on some maps shows"mine dumps. These maps would list individually for $10-$25. But my preference is to offer them as a single lot, substantially discounted. 1943 Vintage State Maps of South Dakota and Tennessee
Dimensions: 16x12in or 41x31cm. This is an original antique double sided page or leaf from the 1943 WWII Wartime published Encyclopedia Britannica Atlas. Please note that this is not a lot for two separate images but rather this is a page with two sides. Each with a map of it's own. There are some condition issues with this map: minor discoloration along the page edges and brittle paper. No major tears or creases or holes. It is in largely Good to Very Good condition. Given it's age. This specific map features on one side the state of South Dakota with its cleanly lined counties and clearly labelled cities and towns. The Missouri River cuts through the yellow of this map. Which could make a nice print, matted and framed. On the other side is the long state of Tennessee. So long that the cartographer split it into two portions. Memphis ... moreand Nashville and the western portion of the state on the top half followed by Chattanooga and Knoxville and the eastern portion on the bottom half of the map. A numbered listing of the state's then railways is featured on the bottom portion. This is a delicate map that needs to be handled carefully and should be stored flat or framed under glass. When it comes to maps one wrong move and there's a tear you can't take back! So, I did fold out the bottom edges so you could see that they are full color and get the complete information for the maps. The first map is a Topography map and the second is a General and Econonic Geological map. They are very large, approximately 42" x 63" and the coloration is so strong the maps still have an"inky" smell to them and the 2nd map has some ink darkening on one end like you would see on building plans. The show the area of Harpers Ferry and Charles Town. West Virginia and parts of Virginia, and parts of Maryland. The western section of these two maps was updated last in 1978 and the eastern half was updated last in 1969. Both are 1:24.000 scale(approx. 1”= 2,000’ Elevation contour intervals are 20’ I found them useful in the study of troop movements during the War between the States. Maps are used but in overall good condition. Main problem is that scotch tape has been used to attach them together and it yellowed. Edges wrinkled and a fold off the edge of one of the maps but only on the white border. Not on the map. Each page from the Atlas measures about 10 x 13 1/4" The maps are very colorful, totally readable. And ion state maps, include identification of cities and towns, with their populations and locations on the map. Some maps also show the state's total population as of 1900, a breakdown of the state's population by race and gender, number of foreign-born and native-born, and land and water surfaces in square miles. 9 Old geological topographic maps West Virginia-Va.-Ohio by quadrangles
Please scroll below the description for photos. I obtained a small group of old United States Geological Survey topographic maps from several states and am listing them as state groups. They were all obtained in a rolled position and will be shipped that way in a rigid shipping container. Most are in quite good condition and can be unrolled safely without any damage but will need to be matted or framed to be held down for display. Would make nice framed wall pieces. Some will have a little typical end of roll or edge crinkling and wear from storage but when unrolled doesn't go into the map area and would be covered by frame or mat. They would display nicely framed or matted. These were mostly reprints of an earlier survey but looks like there might be one or more that are the original edition as I found one that only said Edition of 1922 ... morewith no reprint dates shown. A lot had an original survey done in the early 1900's and these reprint maps range from the 1920'1940's WWII era. They were all made as individual maps. They are not removed from a book or portfolio. The maps are 16-1/2" x 20" in size unless stated otherwise. The back sides are printed with the history and story of the US Geological Surveys and information about the maps. This auction is for a group of 9 maps from West Virginia but two also have another state included. One includes part of Virginia and one Ohio. You only see 7 in the group photo but the other two are the ones I showed spread out so there are 9 in all. One shows coal mines in the Fairmont Region. West Virginia; the other shows coal mines in the Cumberland Region, Maryland and West Virginia. The Fairmont Region map is dated February 1920; the Cumberland Region map is dated March 1921. Both maps are printed on relatively light paper and are somewhat fragile.
