Frank Leslie pioneered the use of illustrations in newspapers. Precursors of documentary photography. These pictures gave Leslie's readers a sense of immediacy by enhancing the text of the battlefield reports he published in his national weekly. The pictures were produced from sketches made of actual battle scenes by the roving artists Leslie commissioned. From their pencil drawings Leslie and his team created wood engravings for the printing process. These images create an almost photographically vivid description of the panoramas. Battle tactics, uniforms, and personages of the war. I have been selling these matted and shrink wrapped in my store and at shows. Now that I have retired I'm just moving inventory out at low low prices. Some of these have sold for a good sum. Depending on subject matter. Some are selling for over $150.00 framed right now on the net. Taken from Frank Leslies Illustrated History of the Civil war. Done in the late 1800's. Will look great framed. We try to save every page or picture possible in the rescue of these 100+ year old damaged books. Very brittle with some edge fraying and typical foxing of paper this old. Measures 12 x 16.5 inches. Full page. These make great gifts for a collector or because of a local town or even someones birthdate or family name. They look great in an office too. I sell 4 different sizes. May 8th to 21st" This is an original 1910 black and white lithographed map of the Battle of Spottsylvania Courthouse. Fought from May 8th to the 21st in 1864, a major engagement in the Overland Campaign, commanded by Union General Ulysses S. Grant. After the Battle of the Wilderness, Grant broke military tradition by refusing to disengage from Confederate General Robert E. Lee's ... moreArmy of Northern Virginia. Disregarding standard military convention, and forsaking the habits of all of his predecessors, Grant regrouped his army and began immediately to maneuver his men southeast, in an attempt to get between Lee's army and the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia. Sensing Grant's intentions, Lee quickly fell back to the crossroads town of Spottsylvania Courthouse. Before the Union Army of the Potomac was able to engage him, Lee ordered his men to dig an earthworks trench over 4 miles long, and forming a salient, known as the"Mule's Shoe" which extended over a mile and a half ahead of the rest of the defensive line. Grant decided the salient was the weakest point in the defensive line to attack, and over the course of several days, threw thousands of men into the Confederate trenches, including surprise morning attacks, but failing to make any progress.
