Description: An excellent ... more1855 first edition example of Colton's map of Kentucky and Tennessee. Like most of Colton's state maps. This map was derived from an earlier wall map of North America produced by Colton and D. Griffing Johnson. Covers the both Kentucky and Tennessee in full as well as parts of the adjacent states. This map was issued at the height of the American westward expansion. Six years before this map was drawn the California gold discovery of 1849 enticed thousands to embark upon the rigorous transcontinental emigration. Meanwhile, with the rise in territorial population to the west of the Mississippi, the eastern states were becoming increasingly divided over the issues of slavery and state vs. federal sovereignty. Within five years these disputes would lead to the American Civil War. Although many major Civil War battles were fought in Tennessee, Kentucky officially remained'neutral' throughout the war. This map also identifies various forts, rivers, mountain passes, fords, and an assortment of additional topographical details. Map is hand colored in pink, green, yellow and blue pastels to define state and territorial boundaries. Surrounded by Colton's typical spiral motif border. Dated and copyrighted to J. H. Colton, 1855. Published from Colton's 172 William Street Office in New York City. Issued as page no. 38 in volume 1 of Colton's 1856 Atlas of the World. A beautifully executed combination of colored topographical land elevations depicted by height with red overprinted railroad lines which have been extensively referenced across the map. Along the side or bottom is a key of boxes. Where each color represents a range of heights. Thus, when viewing the map, you quickly see the topographical nature of the state. Delicately overprinted in red near the title and across the state are the extensive range of railroad lines then in operation. Printed in the very early 20th century. 1936 ATLAS MAP OF KENTUCKY& TENNESSEE Carefully removed from"ATLAS OF THE WORLD" belonged at one time to the Dollar Steamship Lines. Inc. Ltd. Published for Container Corp. of America by Rand McNally& Company Chicago. 1936 Illustrated by Edgar Miller Outside measures approximately:11" wide x 14" long Inside border measures approximately: 9"wide x 12.5"long There is plenty of surrounding border for matting purposes. Some of the pages have some water spots. Foxing and some pages have faired better than others, all and all they have survived over 70 years. Most of the age on the pages give the maps a well worn. Aged appearance. The colors are vibrant and the maps are still readable and framable. I will be posting more maps of states and countries. The material placed around the top may need to be glued again at the seam soon and there is a very tiny bit of glue showing just at the seam. There is a tiny amount of discoloration of the inside lining at the top and one place on the inside lining farther down which could be a glue stain. The fabric around the top was not put in place evenly and shows just a bit of the lining along part of the top. This could probably be fixed by anyone with a little craft know how. The lampshade as a whole appears to be in good condition and is still extremely cute.

Yardstick to estimate current population of this map. One of the joys natural to most collectors is to find and own a scarce or illusive item. If a U.S. Coin or stamp were to exist with only four to five copies known. The value of such an item would be out of most collectors price range. Here is a chance to own just such an item. According to worldcat.org only two copies of this atlas are in the major reference collections. These are located at the Warren Library Association. But they came out of a loose leaf binder that has a copyright date of 1919, see above scan of copyright date. Map will come carefully rolled in kraft paper and inside a strong pvc mailing tube. 1943 Vintage Map of Kentucky and Kansas
Dimensions: 16x12in or 41x31cm. This is an original antique double sided page or leaf from the 1943 WWII Wartime published Encyclopedia Britannica Atlas. Please note that this is not a lot for two separate images but rather this is a page with two sides. Each with a map of it's own. There are some condition issues with this map: minor discoloration along the page edges and brittle paper. No major tears or creases or holes. It is in largely Good to Very Good condition. Given it's age. On one side is the state of Kentucky bordered to the North by the winding Ohio River. There is an inset in the upper left corner of the Western Portion of Kentucky. On the other side is the well planned state of Kansas. With it's orderly counties, and with the major cities and towns clearly labeled. You are looking at a 1980's map of Kentucky. It is by American Geographic. The map measures about 72 inches wide x 58 inches long. It comes in the metal housing that will allow the map to be pulled down or rolled back up automatically. But I can't get it to work properly because I don't know how. I don't have to send the metal housing with this, so let me know if you purchase it and just want the map. This shows Kentucky with all counties including cities and roads.
