Ohio and Wood and Pleasant counties, West Virginia, printed more than 74 years ago. This map labels the steamboat route on the Muskingum River and locates the Parkersburg Marietta Interurban Railway. One of the interurban electric railroad lines that operated in the early 20th century, until the combined effects of the Great Depression and an increase in automobile travel led to their closing. The map also shows steam railroad lines. Including the Baltimore& Ohio, the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago& St. Louis, and the Northwestern Virginia. It even locates individual houses and farms! This map was published by the United States Geological Survey and is identified as the 1927 edition ... moreof the Marietta quadrangle. Reprinted 1938. This rare size map measures approximately 19" by 26" and is in very good condition. There is a 2" tear on the bottom fold which I will repair with archival mending tissue. Beautiful vintage 1947 World Book Encyclopedia map West Virginia colorful LOOK!
This is a map of the state of West Virginia from the limited printing of the 1947 post-war edition of the World Book Encyclopedia. It Is really a pretty map; the colors are bright. The printing is crisp, and it is in great condition. This map is a 2-page spread disbound from the encyclopedia. It was tipped in using a separate little tongue of paper, so the map itself was not cut as it was removed. There is a crease down the center where it was folded in the book. The map was a little too big to fit on my scanner, so not all of it is shown in the scan. It has a white border all the way around it. The map is 9 1/2 inches by 13 1/2 inches. The altitude is color-coded, from green for the lowest altitude through yellow and orange to red for the highest altitude. I don't know much about maps, so I don't know how this one was made. It has ... morean old-fashioned lithographed look to it, but I think I can see dots when I look at it through a magnifying glass. On the back of the map West Virginia towns are listed with their location and population(circa 1947) This is such a nice-looking map! It would look great framed. It is a rare Auto-Trails map. The Library of Congress Catalog lists only one source for these early automobile touring maps, and now you can own one of these very desirable pieces of early motoring Americana. The AUTO-TRAILS system of highways predated not only the Interstate Highway system. But is also earlier than the numbered US Highway system. There were 48 Transcontinental Auto-Trails routes in all, and they were all named, rather than numbered. They were built not by the Federal government, or even by state governments, but by promoters and citiznes at the state, county and local level. With names like the Dixie Highway, the Lincoln Highway and the Old Spanish ... moreTrail Highway, these routes were begun around 1914, and were all complete by 1924, when the US Government designed a new, numbered highway system. The US Highway System used many of the routes of the Auto-Trails System, but slowly, the old named routes were superseded and forgotten except by local history buffs. This Auto-Trails map is two-sided. The first side is a full color county and town map in the traditional 19th Century style that focuses on routes of railroads and topographical features. This is a 1931 map of West Virginia. It is from a scarce Cram's Atlas. The map measures 11.25 X 15 inches. It is in near mint condition showing only minor handling. Buyer will get a printed out page size copy of the index page. This is superior to any"Certificate of Authenticity" which are normally printed out on the sellers own computer. We send this to prove map was extracted from this extremely rare atlas and to help with insurance appraisals as the map will surely increase in value. There are a few reasons this map is rare. And more difficult to obtain than a Cram's map of the late 1800's. In 1931 the United States and the World was in a catastrophic depression. Thus Cram's did not print as many, and very few people had the money to buy this atlas. Let me start out by saying that I feel these maps have never been unfolded and I just couldn't bring myself to unfold them. Even though they are not brittle or fragile in any way. When it comes to maps one wrong move and there's a tear you can't take back! So, I did fold out the bottom edges so you could see that they are full color and get the complete information for the maps. The first map is a Topography map and the second is a General and Econonic Geological map. They are very large, approximately 42" x 63" and the coloration is so strong the maps still have an"inky" smell to them and the 2nd map has some ink darkening on one end like you would see on building plans. The show the area of Harpers Ferry and Charles Town. West Virginia and parts of Virginia, and parts of Maryland. The western section of these two maps was updated last in 1978 and the eastern half was updated last in 1969. Both are 1:24.000 scale(approx. 1”= 2,000’ Elevation contour intervals are 20’ I found them useful in the study of troop movements during the War between the States. Maps are used but in overall good condition. Main problem is that scotch tape has been used to attach them together and it yellowed. Edges wrinkled and a fold off the edge of one of the maps but only on the white border. Not on the map. Up for auction are two of several 19104 C.S. Hammond Atlas of the World maps I have on eBay. There is a map on each side. So you can put them in a two-sided frame to get twice the pleasure from them. Each page from the Atlas measures about 10 x 13 1/4" The maps are very colorful, totally readable. And ion state maps, include identification of cities and towns, with their populations and locations on the map. Some maps also show the state's total population as of 1900, a breakdown of the state's population by race and gender, number of foreign-born and native-born, and land and water surfaces in square miles. Latitude and longitude numbers are shown on all four sides of state maps, but not on city maps. All the maps are generally in very good condition, all complete, no serious flaws. This oversize and attractive lithographed 19th century sheet depicts in great detail the specific events and locations of the Civil War battles or regions depicted. Astoundingly detailed. With an emphasis upon precision and accuracy, attempting to capture visually and cartographically the regions and battles depicted. Unlike topographical ... moremaps or state maps of the era issued by most cartographers. The underlying premise of these Civil War maps was to depict the cartography as it specifically related to events of the Civil War. Thus, individual battles, small forts, troop movements, local rail lines, panoramic views, etc. are often rendered and explained with precision in a manner quite unique. Also, the very large format of the sheet allows for a level of detail which makes the map perfect for display or study by a Civil War buff, since the detail it contains is to be found almost no where else on this scale. Mostly clean condition. some light damp staining across the top blank margin which will disappear once matted and some light minor age-wear- typical for maps of this era, and in no way offensive or severe.
