Seurie“ an unusual French name. Which I had no luck finding on the internet. To get the real story please read on. Wine tasters with Napoleon I coins in them are quite rare. The reason is obvious if you think about it. While Napoleon was at the height of his reign in 1811 within a year he was losing his campaign to the Russian winter. After the restoration of the Bourbons it would be unwise. And perhaps unhealthy to be drinking out of such a taster in public. Of course later, in the reign of Napoleon III, it would have been OK again. The problem: the marks are not all present and consistent. The most important mark is the one on the bottom which is the 1809-19 second coq mark guaranteeing the first standard.950 in the provinces. It is badly rubbed. But enough is left to be absolutely certain it is right, besides of course it is the right size and has the right cartouche. It also tells us something about the fact that the coin is original to the piece. While coins were placed in the bottom of 18th c. tasters. Many later 19th& 20th c. pieces had old coins put in them so they could be described as early. In this case the coin was obviously put in in the same period as the mark was struck. it is half way between the edge of the coin and the rope border of the bottom. If the coin was added later then the placement away from the center and away from other marks would make no sense. Now this doesn’ t mean that the coin and the mark weren’ t added to an earlier taster in 1811. The real problem with this taster are the two marks near the lip. They both are very badly rubbed or even deliberately obliterated. Neither seems to be a maker’ s mark of the 1811 period and one seems to be double struck. It has the French Silver Minvera(with a 1 on forehead) on both the side of the cup and also on the handle(Near the word Sine) It has beautiful design of grapewines on the side. The maker mark is also on the both the side of the cup next to the silver hallmark and on the handle. As mentioned before it is incredible condition for it's age with a few light scratches on the bottom(See all pictures) The Tastevin was used by Early French winemakers who need something bright and shiny(that's the reason for silver) to use when sampling wine still in the barrels. These people are known as a Sommelier and this cup is the symbol of the Sommeliers. It was usually worn around their neck using a chain or ribbon. Antique Solid Silver Repousse Wine Taster Bowl
This is a solid silver.800 fine repousse bowl these are sometimes called sweet meat dishes. Sometimes wine tasters probably made in Germany. Its not marked, but is probably German. It has a repousse image of a huntsman in the center with floral and fruit decorations. One of the handles is separated on the side due to an un-melted solder block, please see photos. This is clearly hand made. The style is 17 th century. But in my opinion this is a 19 th century copy. If I am wrong the starting price is a bargain. It is 5 ¼” x 7” x 1 ¼” tall. This is an attractive small bowl with a fruit design made of 0.8125 fine silver in Germany. It has the Nurnberg mark. It is real repousse, not cast. I am not sure if the mark is correct but it looks like 19 th century anyway. It weighs 1.15 troy ounces and measures 3 5/16” in diameter and 5/8” tall. This piece had dark spots in several places. We are pleased to offer for sale a French Sterling Silver tastevin. Wine taster, from the French"Restauration(Restoration) Period" circa 1815-1840. About the French"Restauration Period" After the fall of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1815. The Bourbon monarchy was reinstated in France. As a result, many previous styles of the former Bourbon monarchy became fashionable once again. This revival of 18th century design. Decor and artisan produced goods is exemplified by the tastevin currently at auction. During the 1700's. Tastevins with snake like handles were the most popular. The repousse and impressed decoration of grape and vine leaf clusters ... morewere also typical of 18th century designs. The tastevin is completely handmade. It was raised on a lathe in the traditional method of the 18th century as can be witnessed by the pinhead indent in the centre of the bowl. Few such t astevins were made. Today. Authentic tastevins from the French"Restauration Period" are rare and are highly collectible. The tastevin bears the French assay mark Minerva. Deuxieme titre. Denoting 800 sterling silver. The Minerva assay mark is also unusual. Although partially rubbed. The Minerva mark depicts the symbol from one of the French provinces. This tastevin would have been amongst the first items to bear the Minerva assay mark. Ca.1838. Both the province of origin and the maker's mark remain to be determined. The diameter of the tastevin is approximately 3.1/8" The weight is a substantial 96 grams. This type of period tastevin is seldom seen. It is one to be proud of. Here is a lovely vintage solid sterling silver wine taster with an embossed rose handle. It is fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1963 with makers mark C&C. 4" x 3.2" and 1" high. It weighs 49g. Offered for your consideration an exquisite 1708 French Sterling Wine Taster. Clear hallmark of Minerva the French Sterling mark for Paris. Picture of a chap with a goose and flask with inscription: Mon Oye Fait Tout" Sweet flower accents and leaf detail. Side of wine taster is embellished with berries and ivy and the inscription"A. HURIN'cafetier 1708' with the hallmark Minerva for Sterling Silver. This is a substantial piece at 4.66 ounces. It is 3" in diameter and 4 3/8" from the top of the handle to the bottom of the bowl. I have not identified the marks. But they appear to be the typical prestige marks used in Hanau Germany made circa 1890. The style of this piece is typical of work done c 1680, but I beleive it isa finely made piece made by the Hanau silversmiths. This is made of finest 800 finess silver; sterling silver is 925, so there is slightly less silver in this alloy. It has Great detail with beautifully worked setting. From an estate; it was black with tarnish when I got it. I did clean and polish a bit but it needs more thorough attentions to be it's best. Inside edge of the raised bottom shows spots of plate loss(see photos) and the mouth looks slightly out of round to me. The thumb rest has a slight raised area over the place where the'ring' underneath perhaps has pressed against it and there are a few slight dings upon close inspection. I think it's actually much nicer than described but I would rather exaggerate flaws than minimize them. The cup has some wonderful ornate decoration and intricate detail. The coin is from the 1630s. The cup does have some hallmarks. Which are pictured in the auction photographs. The cup measures approximately 1 1/2 inches tall and approximately 4 inches wide. The cup opening measures 3 inches in diameter. The 8 reale coin measures 37mm in diameter. The cup weighs 70.0 grams or approximately 2.3 troy ounces. This is a terrific piece of history that would make an amazing addition to your fine collection.
