Up for bid is a fairly large antique American pewter lamp by an unknown maker. Nice scrolled handle and double burner that screws on and off very easily. No major dings to the body with a small area on the lamp base that may or may not have been repaired long ago. See last two photos.it stands approx 8" to the top of the burner cap. It is uneven- little space is devoted to the rich diversity of French andirons, firebacks, or pricket candlesticks, but in general, fireplace implements and lighting are well-covered, prior to the mid-19th century. This is a handsome old brass whale oil lamp from a bygone era. It is approximately 6” in height. The drip pan is 3-1/4” in diameter and the oil font is 2-1/4” in diameter. The lamp has no maker’s mark which is to be expected as most antique functional metal items were not marked. We believe that it was produced in England or America. The spurred handle can be seen on brass articles in both the 18th and 19th centuries. However. The shape of the oil font indicates to us an approximate date of 1825. The lamp is cast brass with the various parts being cast separately. Under magnification you can still discern the hand file finishing marks left over from when the parts were ... morecleaned up following casting. The lamp has a spurred handle finger grip. This finger grip handle makes it easy to grip. Secure to carry, and very portable. The lamp is in excellent overall condition for its age. Besides being 185 plus years old. The lamp was a functional item and was used. There is of course some staining and tarnish to the antique that if you prefer can be polished back to its original brass state of luster. But I believe it to be American. This whale oil lamp is offered here with the opening bid the reserve. DIMENSIONS: The pewter whale oil lamp is 6 3/4" H. x 2 3/8" Dia. at the font and 3 3/4" Dia. at the base. CONDITION: The condition is good with some wear to the finish on the font. And some scratching and minor dents to the body as well. The lamp also leans a little to one side but could be straightened if one prefers.
