Crafted in the Louis XVI taste during the first quarter of the 20th Century is a classic example of the very successful design. Of diminutive proportions. It is more of an oversized bergere arm chair than a true loveseat. The width ideal for lounging casually with a good book in a comfortable setting. The crest is a perfect arch, sharply angled at each corner to form the squared back- this balance of tight lines with soft flowing form was a difficult harmony to achieve, conforming to the clean form important to Neoclassical designs while still being warm and inviting. This piece captures it perfectly, the arched crest mirrored in the projecting bowed apron and the soft cyma-curve of the arms and arm supports. These details giving shape and depth to an otherwise austere adherence to the square. Crisp carved details bring elegance to specific elements of this fine sofa: the acanthus carved arm supports or reeded and curled handholds. The fine deep molding of the frame with gilt highlights over a mellow green ground, and the deep rosette carvings on each knee. The arms are fully upholstered, these flanking a deep and incredibly comfortable down-stuffed cushion, creating ultimate support and sleepy comfort in the overall loveseat design. It is a pleasure to relax in this piece. But it is also just an outstanding work for formal sitting areas where family can gather to socialize in classy decor that is incredibly comfortable. All held together with a long Very rusty screw that attaches the octagonal base. to the top of the candlestick. There are"5"s stamped into each segment in an area that is unseen without disassembly. I believe to signify the 5 segments of each stick. No makers marks- as there wouldn't be considering the period they were made in. but there are 2 other marks. 1 each found on the underside of the bobeche, an"I" on one and an"A" or a"v" on the other(it is very small even under high magnification it was hard to distinguish Gilting is shiny and candlesticks are beautiful! Guaranteed to be original and as described- Antique 18th Century Mid to late third quarter 1700's Louis the XV French seamed brass candlesticks. Candle holders with bobeches. In photo eight I show a close up of the seam on the side, the base is coated with tin as original authentic 18th century period candle sticks should be. Both candle sticks unscrew from the base and are in their original condition, they have never been altered.SIZE: 10 1/2 inches high by 5 1/2 inches wide/across the widest part of the base bottom. Louis XV XVI Style 1850-1899 - Pair 3-Branch Candle holders - Candleabra
Pair Large Brass Three-branch Candle Holders Late 19th Century You are bidding on a charming pair of three branch candle holders designed in an exuberant late 19th century interpretation of 18th century styles. The pair is most likely Continental in origin-my guess would be French. Neither candlestick is marked. Because of their height and narrow size they'd be perfect on a mantle. The base is designed in what I would call a Louis XV shape surmounted by Louis XVI style garlands. The central support is a quiver with arrows in the Louis XVI style with side arabesques. The bobeches. Or disks beneath the candle sockets, have what I would call an Empire exoticism of tropical foliage. The three bobeche on each holder are pierced in 6 places to accommodate prisms or drops. I once tried them with prisms and I felt they took away from the design ... moreof the candlesticks. But the option is available. The holes are noticeable only on close inspection. The backs of the sticks are decorated so that they could readily stand in front of a mirror and display a simply designed reverse. They are both approximately 14.5" tall with a width of approximately 2.5" at the base and 9.75" at the widest point of the bobeches. I believe they are brass and there may be some very old traces or an original gilt finish in places. All photos were taken in strong natural daylight. I try to be very precise with my condition reports so that you know exactly what you are bidding for. There is no significant damage or loss to the pieces- just the few dings and scratches expected on metalwork dating back over a century. These were handmade items that were cast and assembled so the measurements on the two pieces are not always identical. The front of the bases have a separate grill feature and one of the pierced grills is very slightly off center- a condition most likely occurring when the pieces were assembled. There is evidence of tarnish. Verdigris and old polish. There are some flecks of old wax. As with most multi-branch old candlest
