FINE LATE 18th EARLY 19th CENTURY NEW ENGLAND ANTIQUE IRON TASTING SPOON
FINE LATE 18th EARLY 19th CENTURY NEW ENGLAND ANTIQUE IRON TASTING SPOON Description: Great example of a late 18th. Early 19th century blacksmith made spoon dating circa 1790-1840. Spoons such as this are often referred to as'tasting spoons' as they were meant for just that. The bowl of the piece would have been inserted in to a kettle. Iron pot or other hearth cooking device to sample the ingredients cooking therein. The hearth attendant would then vary the recipe they were creating by adding various dried herbs, mortar ground salt or pepper pods, etc. As you can see this example has a deeper ladle, which suggests it was also for serving. As you can see the blacksmith who created this piece worked in a fine overall form with a twist to the handle. Nice smaller size. Just as the type that would have been carried in a field satchel ... moreas well. Just a nice example of period New England metalware offered for a period of five days without reserve and a very low starting bid. Thanks for visiting us and Happy Bidding! Rare Late 18 th Century English Brass Horn Book Alphabet ABC Letters Teaching Aid This rectangular metal brass alphabet tablet was cast in relief. The 26 alphabet letters plus ampersand& OE. The tablet measures 5 inches tall and 2 1/2" wide in seven rows(one row for each day of the week) The back is inscribed St Pauls AD 1729. We do not know the exact age of this piece. The original foundry mould of the 1729 brass hornbook was re-struck throughout the eighteenth century and into the nineteenth. Brass horn books such as this were made for children attending private religious schools of the time as a take home teaching aid to give children their first educational building blocks of the English language in the early Victorian period. Made for learning and amusement. As many early games and puzzles with an underlying educational motive. ... moreThe hornbook would be tied to the student’s belt and be pulled out for impromptu study and memorization games. Much like the pocket sized chapbooks. Hornbooks were teaching tools made in a variety of materials, including brass bronze wood pewter and leather as well as other metals. The hornbook is free from any damage or repair. Crude in the making. Not polished smooth or refined, which was to be expected since it was made for children and probably considered disposable. We have not cleaned or in any way altered the surface. The photos show the hornbook with and without a flash. Encrusted with hard earned grunge with centuries of hand rubbing. A very nice example with great age patina. Wonderfully tactile. Wonderfully collectable, and if used imaginatively, wonderfully decorative. A rare example of an early teaching tool. A perfect gift for your favorite teacher. We are pleased to offer free domestic(USA) shipping with this purchase! Please send us an email with any questions or if you would like to see additional photos. Its never too early to think about Christmas! Thank you for bidding!
