The Art of Lost Wax Lost wax casting has been around for thousands of years. Yet few people understand how the process actually works. Although ... moremechanization has facilitated the lost wax process of bronze casting. The procedure is basically the same as that used by the Chinese when they first developed the process in the 2nd millennium BC. The Rubber Mold First the artist creates an original sculpture out of any number of media. Including stone, wax, clay, wood and pottery. This image is coated with a silicone rubber molding material that makes two rubber mold halves(each rubber mold has a front and a back piece) A fiberglass outer shell is added to the back of each mold so it retains its shape and rigidity during subsequent uses. These molds are the only components that are ever re-used in the casting process. All other components are re-created for each casting. The Wax Positive Once the molds are done. The insides are coated with layers of wax. The halves are then bound together and wax poured inside to complete the wax image being created. Once the wax has cooled. The mold is peeled away, yielding a wax image(the wax positive" duplicating the original sculpture. This image must then be"touched-up" to remove any seam lines. Up for auction I have a cute little miniature scotty dog or some type of terrier in the cold painted bronze Vienna- style. This little guy. However, was made in Japan, as embossed on his underside. I cannot make out what the maker's mark inside of the diamond shape says. This piece is about two inches long. I can get better measurements if needed. I assume it is bronze, but it could be a different metal, I am not entirely knowledgeable about types of metal. There is a loop on the dog's collar which may have held a leash or something. There is an unusual hole in the dog's mouth. Where he must have held something, or perhaps where he is meant to hold something(almost the size of a pencil or cigarette) Some paint is flaking off, as is usual for an old piece like this. Lost wax casting has been around for thousands of years. Yet few people understand how the process actually works. Although mechanization has facilitated the lost wax process of bronze casting. The procedure is basically the same as that used by the Chinese when they first developed the process in the 2nd millennium BC. The Rubber Mold. First the artist creates an original sculpture out of any number of media. Including stone, wax, clay, wood and pottery. Old Asian Japanese Chinese Bronze Melon Water Dropper Vines & Leaves
I believe these water droppers are called suiteki. This particular one came from the estate of an elder gentleman who was an artist and collector. Therefore I have no history or real knowledge of it's true age or origin. It does have age and I know is at least over 50 years old. Asian but again not clear if it is from Japan or China. It is a lovely little object. A melon with intertwining vines and leaves with the stem as the pouring spout. It is not marked. The images really can explain best. The box measures about 16" x 16" x 2 1/2" There is a split that is starting to occur on the front of the box, along the line of the grain. The plaque alone weighs almost 6 pounds. Old 1890 Japanese Patinated Bronze Mixed Metal Shakudo Nagowa 11in Signed Vase
This item is a ca. 1890 Japanese Mixed Metal Shakudo 11in Patinated Bronze Vase from the Nagowa Factory. With an applied silver moon, overlaid with a copper stylized bird, and with the vase in excellent overall condition. Vase is in excellent overall condition, but does have some slight scuffs in the patinated bronze finish. There are no dents, and we have not attempted to clean the patinated bronze surface in any significant way. We did polish the silver moon, as it was black with tarnish. The beak and underbelly of the bird may also be tarnished silver, but we have chosen to leave those alone and as found, and everything else on the surface of the metal is exactly as found, when we purchased the vase at a recent Midwest estate auction. Again, just to clarify, we polished only the moon, and nothing else on the vase. The vase stands 10-3/4 ... moreinches tall, it weighs 3.85 lbs without packaging materials, it is bottom marked with the distinctive seal of the Nagowa factory, and it is also signed on the side of the vase in Japanese, as we are showing in the attached photos. The vase is exactly as pictured and described, as best we can determine from on-line research. We purchased the vase at a recent Midwest estate auction, exactly as you see it in the attached photos, and have not significantly cleaned the surface. He was born in what was then Minamiarima, Nagasaki, now Minamishimabara) on 16 December 1884 and entered Kyoto City University of Arts to study sculpture in 1903. He graduated from there in 1907 and immediately enrolled in the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, from which he received a second sculpture degree in 1912. He began sculpting full time after his discharge from military service in 1915 and, by 1921, he was a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. He was inducted into the Japan Art Academy in 1925. Kitamura submitted some of his work into an unknown event of the"Mixed Sculpturing" category of the art competitions at the 1932 Summer Olympics. But did not win a medal. He is known as the sculptor of the 10-meter-tall Peace Statue in Nagasaki Peace Park. The statue and the park are near the hypocentre where the atomic bomb exploded on 9 August 1945.
