Crack in one side of head and face, Additional Information: This well used sculpture is out of the ordinary when measured to the mainstream of Dogon art. There is no doubt as to its origin among the Dogon however is not illustrated in the literature and due to its unique seated angular shape and its bisexual character. It is unusual and exceptional. Among the Dogon of the Bandiagara escarpment near the Niger River in Mali, art and mythology are often the same, sharing visual images whether carved or spoken of during their rituals. A carving such as this old example of a seated figure representing either an ancestor or primordial being is kept in the lineage elderâs house and is used during annual rites that took place during the winter solstice known as âgoruâ. The figure has a manâs beard and a womanâs breasts depicting a being that is in keeping with Dogon creation myths in which tell that beings were both male and female at one time. The head and headdress are particularly interesting. The sharply carved arms and legs and the shaping of the head and the mass of the upper chest makes this the work of a master carver of some skill. The Ambete are part of the same group as the Kota and Punu and share with them a cult surrounding ancestral bones. The reliquary figures are particularly interesting. They are usually quite large. Columnar in shape and have a hatch at the back. It is sometimes claimed that bones are kept in this compartment. In all the examples I have seen, the space available is much smaller than the reiquaries used by the Fank, Kota, etc. I am inclined to think, that apart from some fragments, this compartment was chiefly intended to receive Bilongo- magical substances to keep the guardian powerful- rather than human remains. The latter would have been stored in a more secure basket beside the guardian. Interestingly. The hatches of these two contain a large clam shell, fastened in place with a nail and set in a bed of raffia, apparently a fetish object, leaving little room for anything else. The figures are quite large at 29" tall and wear necklaces. The faces are extremely distictive. Lozenge-shaped, with a central brow beneath which are smallish features designed to scare away potential thieves of the precious bones. Rows of teeth give the mouth bite. This is a rare and powerful figure. Seldom offered for sale on eBay.

Additional Information: This well carved figure of a woman is beautify carved with a subtle expression and composed stance with short straight legs. This is a typical Tabwa figure and would stand dramatically in a collection. Tabwa figures represent ancestors who were to assist in daily activities and during the hunt. Tabwa art is both a symbol and an aesthetic statement as the figures are often elaborately scarified in a fashion known among them until the middle of the twentieth century. The distinctive facial scarification consisting of a number of lines along the sides of the face and along the forehead and abdomen were the means whereby Tabwa identified themselves to localities and social status. unmarked pair of pink figural candlesticks with male and female in colonial garb
I have for you this evening a pretty pair of unmarked pink figural candlesticks made most likely in Germany and dating from the early to mid twentieth century is my guess. The pair features bisque porcelain cast in white and then glazed in shades of pink with gold beading. One stick features a boy in typical German hunters garb and the other has a female with sheeves of wheat in traditional German dress and hat. These figures are fairly well done and were made popular by the big name German porcelain manufacturers in the 18th and 19th centuries. These would look fantastic in a little girls room or in a cabinet or on a stand with actual candles in them. Please see my condition report and all the pictures before placing your bids. Item dimensions and dating: All measurements are approximate. Both sticks measure 10" tall with a base diameter ... moreof 3.5" The date of manufacture is hard to date as is the maker but my guess is they are German and date from the early to mid twentieth century. Condition report: These are for the most part in very good condition considering the delicate nature of these types of pieces but there are some issues. The most noticable issue is on the reverse of the female stick up near the top of the stick were the leaves dip down as two of these are broken off and can be seen in several of my pictures and there is one to the side as well. There are other small chips and dings throughout on leaves and other parts but nothing that really syands out as an eyesore but please make sure and look at all of my pictures before placing your bids and please ask for more if needed before placing your bids. I have lightly cleaned these as they were vertually covered in dripped wax but they will require more cleaning when they come to you. Description Hi.I have for sale an Art Deco green patinated spelter female figural lamp that is in lovely working condition.This lamp dates to around 1930 and is typical of the Art Deco period.The lamp shows a nude elegant female with arms out stretched holding two ribbed supports that hold a tubular shade. The lamp is made of spelter and is patinated green.She is standing on an alabaster plinth that has two chromed edges.The alabaster plinth sits neatly on a chrome weighted base. The lamp is fully working and the wiring looks to be around 10 years old.The wiring looks good and all the connectors are sound.I have also put on a more modern safety plug. The shade is cream glass and there are no cracks.Inside is a pygmy lamp and to gain access you simply unscrew the right hand flange. The detail to the casting is superb and the artist has gone ... moreto a lot of work to create a pleasing looking lamp.The female is wearing the pointed head bonnet that was prolific in the Art Deco period. The lamp is very tactile and is of a good size.The measurements are 22 1/4 inches high(56.5cm) x 11 1/4 inches at its widest(28.5cm)The base measures 5 1/2 inches in diameter(14cm) and the top alabaster plinth measures 3 1/2 inches in diameter(9cm) The general condition is very good and is a credit to its previous owner considering it still has the tubular shade.There has been a small repair to the left hand side where the ribbed tube meets here hand.I would say it has been re-soldered at this point.There is no damage to her hand.But you can see some patination loss that travels down to part of her wrist.The ball section of the rib where her hand is holding has been touched up by the looks of it.There is also a small line around the left arm.I dont think this is a split as it is strong with no gap or opening.I think it is the casting line where the arm would have been made seperate because it needed to be tubular to take the cable. Antique Art Deco Cast Bronze Female Figural Stained Glass Lily Table Lamp This gorgeous lamp is so old! It is cast bronze and it does work. However, it is not in excellent condition. There are some issues that need to be addressed to restore this antique back to its former glory. I think it was made during the art deco period, 1920’s to 1940’s. I am not sure. I could not find any maker’s mark or engravings. The old light switch was made here in the USA and it still works as you can see in the photos. The cloth cord is so frayed from age on the exterior although the wires are still fully covered. There are slight fissures on the bronze itself especially on the back of the female figure. The lily stained glass shade is still completely intact(no damages) The lamp stands 14” tall including the shade. The hairstyle is most likely Mangbetu. The Azande and Mangbetu peoples live in the Northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo in the region of savanna and forest. They are organized into several small states and had multitude of cults and associations based on the spiritual believes. Pots like this one are used as a container for offerings. Water and ritual beverages and local wine and beer. But, most of the wooden and ivory sculptures are secular. They belong to the royal and aristocratic families. Women have a distinctive head shape, resulting from binding of the head. This feature is found in most of their female representations. Elaborate jar like this would have been used as a prestigious object rather than an everyday vessel. Antique Semi Nude Female Figural Accent Table Lamp Art Nouveau
Beautiful 1920's art nouveau boudoir table lamp. Semi nude female figure with an arm outstretched towards the globe. Lamp is a spelter material with bronze color plating. It has a nice aged patina now. The lamp globe is a satin finish glass in a very pale green color. It attaches to the lamp base with two screws(attached) There is a number on the base(No. 183) But I have not been able to come up with the maker. Lamp is 10" length by about 10" tall by 3" deep. Globe is about 5.5" wide. The lamp is in very good condition, it has been re-wired a long time ago, as evidence by the cord plug style. The switch is located on the lamp base and is in working order. There is original socket wiring inside the lamp post going to the bulb socket. It works fine now, but it should be redone at some point in the future. There is only ... morea 15 watt bulb in the photos, I believe 7 watts are available for a softer light. The lamp overall is in fine condition, there is some slag or extra metal on mold lines on one place on her outstretched arm. It looks like there may be a small fracture(crack) on the base at the number imprint in the rear, but it no way is a structural defect, and I actually never noticed it until now as I was looking for imperfections. They are made of white metal and may have originally been silver plated but currently displays a 50+ year old painted surface. This particular piece has seeds inside which tell that the object was used as a rattle which produces sounds. This was used as a rattle and also as a divination device which purpose was to communicate with the spirits and to guide the priest or diviner during a consultation. The figure on the top of the rattle represents the spirit medium that assist the diviner. The figure is well carved according to the Luba style. The skill of the Luba in fashioning small objects of great beauty is famous worldwide. And their talents have had enormous influence on neighboring cultures. Antique Art Deco Female Dancer Figural Bronzed Iron Bookends As With Wings. Rare This is a gorgeous set of bookends out of my personal Deco/ Arts& Crafts collection. These gals are incredibly heavy(8 lbs each! and very well made bookends and are quite majestic standing around 9 inches tall with almost an 8 inch'wingspan' The bookends depict a dancer with a flowing dress- mid curtsy and the quality of the iron work is higher end. Similar in quality to the bookends manufactured by Bradley& Hubbard or Tiffany. These were probably made a little before the deco period. But they truly embody the French Art Deco stylings of the late 20's. These are listed in the Collectors Encyclopedia of Bookends on plate 1007 and have a rarity of 5 out of 5. These are also listed on the Antique Collectible Bookends site, one of the larger collections ... moreof antique bookends, many of which appeared in the mentioned book as well as others. this is a stunning antique porcelain and brass ornate figural electric table lamp. it has a very ornate footed coy fish victorian style brass raised base with a wonderful patina from age. the female is a very ornate victorian women porcelain female which was handmade and hand painted. the lamp post has great roping and also made from brass. Its also topped with a solid brass finial. it is in good shape. We are offering a Matched Pair of exquisitely crafted Cordials with elegant Frosted Stems that depict a Woman draped in a classical Gown. They are in the style of Bayel's Bacchante Glasses. We have not been able to pin down the Glass company that produced them. Though they're possibly French. The Glasses are not marked. Each Cordial measures 6 1/2" High and has a capacity of about 5 Oz. The drum is in the form of a standing female without the head and the arms. the standing body wears a leather cache-sexe decorated with beads and cowrie shells. All these motifs elevate the status of the drum. Which origin is unclear. Drums with female body were found among the Akan Asante or Fante. Geometric designs as well as the reed seeds encrusted in breasts and in Bali suggest ... morea Makonde origin.
