Ornate antique early 1900s French/German bronze dresser jewelry box with a painted portrait of a young man. These are usually French and I believe it is French. But there is a piece of printed paper underneath the velvet in the lid that has German printed words. So, that is why I listed it as French/German. The miniature portrait is painted on a thin slice of ox bone. This beautiful box is in good condition, but has a few dents on the bottom.The green soft velvet interior has some stains and, should most likely be replaced. The box has relief of rose garland on the sides and a rope twist around the top. The lid opens and closes just fine, but the top velvet circle needs to be glued in place it keeps falling out when I open the lid. The box measures 2 7/8" in diameter and is 1 3/8" tall. A very beautiful antique Gilt Bronze Jewelry Box. The box is decorated with a hand painted Limoges Enamel Plaque depicting a beautiful woman. The portrait is depicts Jean-Jacques Henner's image of Saint Fabiola. The original painting was painted in 1885. The plaque is signed"TR" HR" or something similar. The plaque is surrounded with tiny seed pearls and the interior has the original velvet lining. Overall dimensions are 4" x 2 3/4" x 1 5/8" high. The Jewelry Box is in very good overall condition with no damage to the Enamel Plaque. The only thing to note are losses to the seed pearl border which you can see in the images. A gilt bronze(ormolu) pillar is set in the center of the agate. Magnificent French Victorian Renaissance Revival Jewel Casket Made of cast bronze. Brass, champleve enamel and green onyx. Composed of many parts that are held together with screws. Threaded rods and hand cut nuts. Photos 11& 12 show the construction. The cast bronze legs terminate in lion paws, they support a half round body made of green onyx with brass demilune end pieces. The top frame and lid are brass, the lid is centered with a cabochon cut piece of onyx within a bronze frame. A jeweled"bracelet" overlays the onyx. Condition: Recently cleaned and polished. No losses to the enameling. 1 pendent finial is missing on one of the back legs. One back leg is out of alignment and its foot is not level. The piece of onyx mounted on the lid is cracked across its center. The"bracelet" overlay is an old addition. Used to ... morecover the crack. Its cabochon stones are glass and one has a chip. The bracelet is not firmly attached and can be easily removed. The cracked onyx can be replaced with the material of your choosing, mirror, padded fabric, lapis lazuli. The velvet lining is original and has held up very well, there is one tear on the lid lining, upper right corner. The lid lining has glue residue around its perimeter, indicating that there was a now missing gimp trim. Marks: Not marked. Clearly French made and of the highest quality. What makes this Erhard& Sohne reliquary box stand out is its condition. The bronze has a very nice patina and the detail of the relief is very good. The box shows various scenes of the life of Jesus. All in Gothic church like settings, with rosettes and fleur de lis motifs intertwined. The inside of the casket has its original blue velvet, the key is present and the lock actually works. The hinges work as intended. The box has a bronze touch mark on the bottom of a lion with an E underneath it. This is repeated in the handle of the key, which has the same lion. Presented for your consideration is this wonderful ART DECO style metal jewelry casket. The design is classic Deco with a distinct Egyptian Revival influence. My thought is that it dates to the first quarter of the twentieth century around the time of the discovery of King Tut's tomb in 1922. I believe it is made of brass with a bronze finish since the box is fairly light in weight. There are no indications of a maker. This piece measures 1 3/4" high. 5 1/4" long and 4" deep. The interior is lined in the original red velvet. The box is in very good estate condition with no damage, significant wear or restoration noted. It should be welcome in any collection! Fabulous antique Franz Bergmann bronze of an owl resting on the book. Book opens into a jewelry box. This piece dates to early 20th century. Owl has beautiful dirty gold patina. On top of the brown book and fabulous glass eyes. Bronze Size- Height 10.5in. Base is 6in long by 4.5in wide. It is heavy- around 4.3kg(9.5lbs) It is marked Geschutzt on the bottom of the book as shown in one of the photos. It means patented in Austrian- mark common to many Bergman bronzes. I sold an owl just like this one last year that had BERG written in same location as Geschutzt. Absolutely wonderful decorative tray adorned with a lovely young flapper girl of the Roaring'20s. Looks like she is standing in a breeze as her scarf and skirt are blowing to the side. And she is holding objects in her hands: maybe she is applying makeup. With a lipstick and compact or mirror; or perhaps she is a reporter, pen and notepad at the ready to jot down the facts of a fast-breaking story. The design of the base may be a clue- looks like it has a spine, which a book or notebook does have, but I suppose a compact does, too. Whichever, she is charming! Not sure of the original purpose of this piece. Possibly ashtray though it doesn't have any rests in the design of the bowl, and certainly no evidence that it ever was used for that purpose. Their name clearly incised on the back. Circa 1920's. This is an electro-formed piece(more commonly known as bronze-clad) a manufacturing technique whereby a skin of bronze(sometimes copper) was made to adhere to a plaster figure by the process of electro-plating. It was used by a handful of companies in the early 1900's to produce decorative household objects that had the look, feel and heft of solid bronze yet were affordable by the middle class. Pompeian Bronze was one of the more distinguished(my opinion) of those companies. You can feel in the bottom an indentation, representing the"wick" where the piece was hung upside down in a vat of electro-plating solution. Condition is superb! No damage whatsoever to any of the structural elements. No breaks in the cladding, no mashed corners, nothing dented or creased. Paint all is original and while clearly there has been fading, chipping and wear, that paint largely remains intact and vibrant. The red and green colors are hallmarks of Pompeian pieces. Decorated in the Secessionist- Jugendstil- art Nouveau taste and made by Erhard& Söhne of Schwäbisch Gmünd. Germany. Signed on the bottom with the company’s stamped hallmark of a Lion standing on an“E” This box is beautifully designed with stylized geometric designs in several layers of relief and a central panel depicting six eight robed figures in ancient classical robes. The details are very fine and similar to the work seen on coins. The overall NeoClassical look is very much in keeping with the work of the Austrian Secessionist workshops being done at the same time ... moreduring the eraly 20th century. The box is lined with unfinished wood panels. The outside of the box has developed an beautiful rich darkened glossy patina over the past century. The metal is fairly light in weight. But the box has a nice solid feel when held. It is one of Erhard and Sohne’s best and most striking designs in my opinion. AGE: Circa 1910. Early 20th Century. CONDITION: Good condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Light wear to the darkened patina showing highlights to the brass/ bronze in the higher area of the designs. Beautiful old patina, although it could be successfully polished to it’s original golden color, if desired. The hinged lid of this box is beautifully adorned with a border of raised bronze laurel leaves and a rich dark blue foil under glass all framing a hand painted portrait of a lady in a powdered wig wearing a large fancy plumed hat. The portrait is covered with a glass crystal and there is no damage. The outside of the box is adorned with draped delicate flowers with a ribbon wreaths. The lid is hinged and the interior is lined with a dark blue velvet. The lining is in very good condition. The only markings are for France on the lid lifter. The box measures 3 1/2" in diameter and stands 1 1/2" in height. This box is in excellent condition showing only normal signs of surface wear and use to ... moresome of the gold gilt where the bronze is showing through. 1930's Erhard & Sohne Bronze Jewelry Casket Chest in the Nouveau Style w/ Key
This is a beautiful gilded and silvered bronze casket style Erhard& Sohne box. It is in the Art Nouveau style and probably dates from the late 1920's to the early 1930's when Erhard& Sohne ceased operations. The box has a foliate or floral design done in a two-tone bronze. It is double marked. With"Made in Germany" stamped on the bottom edge and with the logo or symbol that Erhard and Sohne used also impressed into the metal on the bottom of the casket. It is lined in a deep blue, almost cobalt colored velvet, which is not faded at all- pretty unusual for a piece this old. The original key, decorated with a standing lion, is included. When inserted into the lock, the key will turn but the lid is not"locked" it might just need a minor adjustment to get it to"catch" but we will leave that up to ... moreyou and your jeweler. We often see Erhard& Sohne boxes in a square shape with a flat top but rarely see one in this treasure chest shape. Especially with the Nouveau design. It's just a beautiful, beautiful box that would grace your dresser or night stand to keep your trinkets and jewelry from getting scratched on the dresser top. The box is 6 and 1/8" long x 3 and 3/8" wide x 3 and 3/8" tall. The handle at the top is about 1 and 1/4" tall so the total height. With the handle extended up would be about 4.5" tall. We haven't polished this box. The silvered bronze has more of a grayish color than a bright silver, like a darker patina. The"gold" areas are bright with only very moderate wear to the gilding. This would be such a beautiful presentation box if you're planning to pop the question and present an engagement ring. It would be a thoughtful gift for your 8th wedding anniversary(bronze) I would probably use this box on my dresser to hold my jewelry at the end of each day.
