Vintage, expandable bookrack featuring an owl sitting on a branch with pinecones with all the detail typical of pieces forged in the 1920s/1930s. THIS ALMOST CENTURY OLD EXPANDABLE BOOK RACK IS BOTH FUNCTIONAL& BEAUTIFUL. Judd Mfg. began producing a decorative line of fine-quality sand castings in iron. Brass and bronze. The tablet measures 5 inches tall and 2 1/2" wide in seven rows(one row for each day of the week) The back is inscribed St Pauls AD 1729. We do not know the exact age of this piece. The original foundry mould of the 1729 brass hornbook was re-struck throughout the eighteenth century and into the nineteenth. Brass horn books such as this were made for children attending private religious schools of the time as a take home teaching aid to give children their first educational building blocks of the English language in the early Victorian period. Made for learning and amusement. As many early games and puzzles with an underlying educational motive. ... moreThe hornbook would be tied to the student’s belt and be pulled out for impromptu study and memorization games. Much like the pocket sized chapbooks. Hornbooks were teaching tools made in a variety of materials, including brass bronze wood pewter and leather as well as other metals. A most unusual book carrier or adjustable book slide. Made from solid cast brass, top quality and extremely handsome having been professionally re-polished to gleam. What makes it really unusual is it's form, with the moving third bookend, which slides along the holder depending on the amount of books you wished to store. Each of the end panels is a riot of Victorian design all revolving around the central mythical face in the centre. It stands on four original ball feet and each end has a decorative handle. The underside is engraved with the English design registration number which dates the piece to 1889. Excellent condition measuring 16 1/2" from handle to handle with an opening for books measuring 13 1/2" the depth measures 5 3/4" and the end panels measure 7" tall. This is a beautiful piece. Large brass Bible stand. Surface of platform measures 13 3/4" wide X 12" high(big enough for a large family Bible) Lip on bottom of platform to support Bible is 1 3/4" Unit stands 5" high with platform folded down. Platform can be placed in 10 height positions(from flat to highest position) This piece had some damage to it and was reconditioned. If you look at the 2nd and 3rd pictures you'll see a'bend' in it. It was straightened as much as possible without causing any structural damage. There was a spot where it needed to be re-soldered under the book platform. The brass base had a lot of tarnish on it so it was cleaned and painted with"Metallic Classic Bronze"gives a great antique appearance and matches the original brass of the book platform quite well. When you're displaying it with a Bible on it and looking at the front. The damage I mentioned can hardly be noticed. About the production of these miniatures The material of the object is brass. Achieving such a high level of detail requires a very complex and time intensive production process: At the beginning moulds of wax were created. Including drains for air and melted brass. All that was covered with clay. The mould was dried and fired. At the same time the wax melted and created a hollow space which was later filled with molten bronze. After casting and cooling the ceramic ... moremould was destroyed and the brass core removed. The drains were then taken off and the whole surface was engraved by hammer and punch followed by the very costly and detailed painting.
