This large and ornate cast iron rarity dates from the late 1860s-early 1880s and measures 11” tall x 14” x 14” The open work cast iron top features elaborate Eastlake inspired designs and is supported by 4 tall feet. The pair in front are massive cabrioles with elaborate foliate knees and lions’ paw feet. The rear duo are simpler with Eastlake designs and understated claw feet. The entirety is barn fresh with old. Un-enhanced rusted surface showing pitting from years on the hearth. There is a large old stable crack on the top near the rear as shown in the close-ups. You will also note a history of replacement fasteners attaching the feet to the top. None of these looks younger than 100 years old. There are some missing bolts/rivets as well. This auction is for an ornate antique Victorian 19th Century German ... morecast iron fox head inkwell. From the late 19th century. This inkwell features a hinged fox head lid that has yellow glass eyes on top of an embossed reticulated base featuring acorns, leaves, a haversack and long guns. On the base it is marked, E G Zimmermann Hanau. This is an excellent casting with great detail visible all over on the lid and the base. The fox head is realistically modeled with a well delineated open mouth and teeth. It does have some condition issues; one of the cast tabs for the hinge is broken, and there is no longer a pin in place to hold the upper and lower portions together. In addition, one leaf is missing, on the left side. There is not an ink cup to set into the inkwell, and you can see some oxidation inside the hollow area. Still, it looks great, a very nicely done piece and quite desirable. We couldn't find another one like this one, so you'll want to keep an eye on this antique and unusual piece. Unusual Antique Vintage Victorian Double Cast Iron Inkwell w/ Candle Holder
This is a very unusual and beautiful(1800's? Victorian ink well that is made out of cast iron and features two glass inkwells. Along with a candle holder. There is some kind of bird figure in the center which makes up the base of the candle stick holder and there is also some kind of emblem in the center of the bird creature. There is also a place to hold two quills or pens. On the back of the Gothic framework shows the detailed back of the bird. Almost an Egyptian Deity? The Size is approximately 7 3/8” in height and 9” by 5 ½” wide base. The Condition; it has been painted by someone. There is wax on it in places from someone using a candle as evident in the photos, looks like something was burned in the bowl area. This is a matched pair of solid cast iron boot scrapers. Each has raised design identical on both sides. Aside from the myriad experiences in their antiquity and the grime and accumulation over their years they are. To my eye in beautiful condition with no chips, breaks or cracks of any kind. They are solid cast iron each weighing approx 4 lbs. There are traces of degraded old paint which in some areas tend to obscure the design and make them less sharp. A cleaning bath will surely remedy this condition. I have done nothing to clean them as many purists prefer them in as found condition. The only wear associated with these is a polished appearance at the very edges where hundreds if not thousands of boot scrapes have polished the cast iron which ads to their character. Victorian Antique Patinated Cast Iron Recumbant Lion - Grand Tour - Landseer
I think this is one of my most favorite estate finds ever! In the early 1860's. During the reign of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Sir Edwin Henry Landseer was commissioned to create four huge bronze lion figures to sit at the base of Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square in London. Landeer designed the lions and they were cast by Baron Marochette. They were placed in Trafalgar Square in 1867, shortly before Landseer passed away in 1873. Landseer was a favorite artist of Queen Victoria. When these giant lions were finally unveiled. There was a hue and cry in London because the lion's tongue was hanging out of the side of it's mouth and Londoners thought this was undignified. Landseer, who worked from photos and other artist's engravings of wildlife, based most of this lion sculpture on other artist's engravings. But, ... morefor these lions, he used his own house cats as models and oddly enough, his cats had tongues that lolled outside of their mouths. Pretty amazing stuff, eh? These Grand Tour lions were made with the tongues back in the lions' mouths so that the lion appeared more dignified and regal. Anyway. The lions were so popular that smaller versions were cast in bronze and iron and many of these were sold to tourists on the"grand tour. This particular lion is cast iron and looks like, at one time, it might have been silver plated because the front legs of the big cat have a silver cast to them. Whatever plating was used, presumably to protect the lion from the elements since many were placed on pedestals in the garden, some of it has worn off over the years. So, this lion has a moderately weather worn feeling to it, with just a hint of rust on the rump. That said, the detail of the casting is still fabulous and does not look like it survived the elements in any way, shape or form. So, it might have been outside only in summers. Rare. Antique, 152 year old, cast iron hanging match safe in very good condition. Marked"Matches" on the receptacle, and"Patented July 21. 63" across the top. Covered in traces of silver paint which may be original. I've held on to this piece for about 20 years debating how to replace the missing back piece. It was held in place with 4 iron pins& copper washers, may have been a beveled mirror, advertising plate or picture frame. Large piece, measures 7 5/8" tall x 4 3/8" wide with a 3 1/2" long striker on each side of the 1 1/2 x 3" match holder. Complete& undamaged, other than the missing back plate.
