Best PAIR 18th Century French Candlesticks Brass Bronze Seamed Rococo France
Best PAIR 18th Century French Candlesticks Brass Bronze This is a great pair of 18th century candlesticks that I believe are French. It is hard to find great candlesticks like these in pairs and even harder to find them complete including the removable Bobochet. These candlesticks are made as a pair- as shown. They are marked number"1" and"2" The bases are sand cast and turned and decorated, and the stems are seamed and heavy cast in two pieces. The candlesticks measure 6 1/2 inches tall and 4 1/2 inches across the base. They are in great as-found condition. I have not polished these but I did gently remove some wax. Under the wax is some green staining that I do not believe is a light surface discoloration and can easily be cleaned off if desired. Under one of the bases, there is a bit of corrosion as shown in the pictures. ... moreWe sell antique and used items. These items bear the signs of normal use and wear. In response to questions- there is absolutely no base-metal soldering anywhere on this untouched pair. The difference in the photos of the peening is due to oxidation- both are structurally pristine. After about 1700. The evolution of forms in French Louis 14 th(1660-1715) and R é gence(1700-1730) period candlesticks became at once rapid and well-established. Bolstered by the tremendous growth of the middle class- pairs prior to 1725 become increasingly harder to find. This particularly handsome design of candlestick is very much of the Louis 14 th/R é gence period– the turnings are simultaneously robust and complicated. And yet the massive aspect of the candle socket looks back to the 17 th century. They are not seamed. Which also argues for an earlier than later date- closer to 1700- and bear a few traces of having been gilded.

Unique is a problematic word to use in Decorative Arts– sooner or later. Another example will probably show up. However, in 40 years of experience, I’ve never seen this form in wrought iron– only in formal brass, bronze, silver, and later, glass. The fact that it was obviously a marriage presentation piece– note the two sets of initials– can also argue for its uniqueness. Another factor that adds to its desirability is the presence of two struck or engraved motifs– the daisy wheel& Arbre-de-Vie– Tree of Life– both of which fall into the fascinating. Ancient and highly complicated category of protective symbols. The definitive work on antique French iron is Raymond Lecoq’s Les Objets de la Vie Domestique(pub. 1979) Unfortunately. It is out of print, difficult to find, expensive– 400 to 900 Euros- however. It is a must. It is uneven– not enough sp
18th/19th Century French Brass Tray, Hand Painted Portrait Center
DESCRIPTION: Antique French Brass Dresser Tray with Hand Painted Portrait Center. The Portrait is painted on what I think is a very thin slice of ivory or bone. I have taken several close-up photos of the painting for viewing. There is also a title or signature on the lower right hand corner but I can't quite make it out. Inside the frame behind the portrait there was also an old Stamp(like a postage stamp shape) This can be seen in the last photo and was returned to it's place behind the portrait. The Tray has four winged Griffins or Dragons with Bosoms. Each Dragon or Griffin holds a Floral Garland in it's mouth. I believe this Tray dates to possibly sometime in the 18th or early to mid 1800's but I'm not sure just when. It is truly a work of Art and is just as I found it.
