They are VERY detailed showing topographical features(rivers, creeks, lakes, ponds, marshes, mountains, etc. towns, cities and villages, routes of old railroads and canals(including the historic Erie Canal) and of course old roads and highways. Improved roads(macadam or gravel) are colored heavy red, connecting roads(dirt roads) are lighter red. There are no asphalt or concrete roads- nothing like what we would call a highway today.
