Arts and Crafts/ Art Deco period dresser tray, Mackintosh rose
Handsome high arts and crafts period dresser tray. Glass topped. Faux wood grained, double handled. The center motif is almost identical to the Mackintosh rose, and the entire piece is understated, in the manner of true arts and crafts sensibilities. The motif is inlaid into the background, although it appears to be paper and not wood inlay. The effect is gorgeous. Very slight damage to one small area(tiny knicks, maybe two or three) of the frame, can be restored satisfactorily with wood grain or felt pen. Other than this, it is in great shape, and I would use it in my home as is.Measures 19" with handles x 11" wide. My brother. An arts and crafts expert, and I are having a"discussion" as to whether this is arts and crafts or art deco. We are calling it both. The rose appears arts and crafts and the side bars show art ... moredeco influence. The date of the tray is probably c. 1910, so it is right on the cusp era-wise. You be the judge.

I recently purchased several CRM items at auction and am not sure when exactly this item was produced, I can find no other examples of it online. The mark is correct and it shows appropriate wear for a vintage piece. Good condition but has definitely been used. Very tactile, bristles are good. Design to handle shows wear, and there are a few little dings, especially to one end corner, see closeup photos. I have not cleaned it as I do not wish to disturb the patina. Nice shiny white glaze with a rose design on the lid in dark lilac on a purple and cream background, the rim has a shiny platignum coloured edge. The sides have cream bands with chequered squares in matching colours. 7.5cm wide x 5cm high. Base has a stamp, I can read"MACKINTOSH COLLECTION" but cannot make out the maker's name. Also included is a lovely perfume or cologne bottle with a leaf shaped stopper. Made of glass, etched with roses in a similar style to the trinket box, in a delicate lilac to pink shade, seems to change colour slightly in daylight. This is 16.8cm high with the stopper in place by 5.6cm wide. Both items are chip/crack and nibble free. Will be packed well and posted promptly. I Googled the following info: Charles Rennie Mackintosh attended evening classes in art at the Glasgow School of Art. It was at these classes that he first met his future wife Margaret MacDonald. Her sister Frances MacDonald, and Herbert MacNair who was also a fellow apprentice with Mackintosh at Honeyman and Keppie. MacNair and Frances would also marry. I purchased them all from a single eBay seller in Germany many years ago- it's not like you see similar examples for sale everyday- and the fact that the seller had so many leads me to wonder if they came from an old(perhaps family owned) wallcoverings store. And while some seem definitely German(Darmstadt rose, geometric Jugendstil) some seem possibly British or at least British influenced(florals in the style of Christopher Dresser and William Morris) and it makes sense that a shop would carry goods from various countries/manufacturers. A stunning original(antique) Art Nouveau press-moulded majolica tile measuring 6" x 6" It features a beautiful Mackintosh rose in a cool lavender colour with hints of teal blue around the edges and a very detailed centre in a rich amber-orange. The groups of spear-like soft apple green leaves are set against an unusually coloured triple cartouche(somewhere between caramel and khaki) The background is bottle green and has some iridescence. Great overall condition. A graze to the raised pattern outline in the flower centre. A little light surface scratching and the merest hint of staining to the attractive background crackle crazing. There are some vintage nibbles at the extreme edges, due to fitting into furniture or a fireplace at the time of manufacture. Please see the detailed scans. Offered in this auction is an exquisite original of early 20th Century fashion– a very wearable lined navy blue walking suit originating in the Arts and Crafts period- from 1860 to 1910. Especially in the second half of that period. The suit is all original, purchased from an estate where there was a beautiful selection of authentic Edwardian clothing. This magnificent walking suit, or day suit, is made of ... moremedium- to heavy-weight wool. The suit has three pieces: Jacket, skirt and belt. The Jacket: The jacket falls in a straight line from collar to hem. There is a notched'sailor-like' collar. The back being long and straight. The collar has two button holes; one on the back closest to the notch, the other in front. There are two mounded buttons underneath the collar so the wearer could fast it up in case of cold weather. The front lapel, wider at the top, falls to thin end and a two-button closure at the waist. The sides of the jacket each have a slit and each slit has four more'non-functional' buttons on the backside. The sleeves end with a slit, as well, and three non-functional button. The belt is attached to the jacket at the sides, and has two buttons on each end, with two corresponding buttonholes on the other side to fasten.
