DESCRIPTION This auction is for an early metal daisy or other flower basket doorstop. If I had to guess the age. I would guess pre-1900. It has been painted over, probably more than once. The mold has openings within the array flowers and are not white spots in the pictures. The back side of the mold is not flat and shows the casts of the flowers and basket. It stands 10" x 5-3/4" wide and weighs 5 pounds before packaging. It looks like it is marked on the bottom, but I'm not sure exactly what it says. It's either letters and a number or all numbers. I used steel wool on the back and bottom to locate the mark. Has had paint added. Some light surface rust. LOCAL PICKUP IS ALWAYS WELCOME. White spots or glare is from the camera flash. Giant antique cast iron Basket of Fruit Doorstop/weighs 20 POUNDS/16&1/2" high
I don't think they get any bigger or heavier than this. A 1920s or so. Painted cast iron doorstop in the form of a basket of fruit. It is 16&1/2" high and it weighs 20 POUNDS. I don't see a maker's mark but I am sure it was made by a well-known foundry. Condition is as found and as shown. Shows surface rust which I think might clean off with a fine steel wool. Some paint loss and the paint is a bit dull- I think once cleaned, it will brighten up. Please look at all of my photos for the best idea of condition. The basket is full of colorful flowers. The flowers are colored in red. Pink, gray, and blue. The entire piece still retains most of its original paint with minimum losses on the high points of the flowers. The gold colored basket has a black semispherical shaped base. It has a looped handle showing a braided branch design on top with a bow above it all. The back is colored in a gold color. Just a beautiful piece. See page 62 in John and Nancy Smith's book"The Doorstop Book: An Encyclopedia of Doorstop Collecting Published by Schiffer Books of Atglen, PA in 2006 for a similar ... moreexample. The piece is also shown in Jeanne Bertoia's Book"Doorstops: Identification& Values" Published by Collector Books of Paducah, KY in 1985 for a similar doorstop. Both references call the door stop French basket and give it dimensions of 11" and 6 3/4" and indicate the doorstop was made by Hubley. This particular doorstop is a bit smaller in dimensions measuring only 10 3/4" and 6 3/8" which could be an indication that this piece is a vintage reproduction. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of the description. Date: Uncertain but most likely early to mid 20th century. Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern. I did a little research and the Angel could be referred to as the Angel of Death. Paint does have some wear and tear. There is a glued on piece of green felt on the bottom and am pretty sure it is not original to the piece. I was unable to find a makers mark. Nice antique cast iron doorstop with fruit in a woven basket. A little different from the standard flowers. This has grapes, a pear, orange, and other stylized fruit. I'm not sure if this is made by Hubley. The base is 5 1/2" wide, stands 5 1/4" tall, and is about 2 1/2" deep. The paint is original, a bit worn, and there are quite a few rust spots, which I think add to the patina. Generally, a pleasing example. this weighs about 5 lb.
