Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The desk is a reproduction made by the Maddox Table Co. of Jamestown, New York. This desk comes right out of the New England estate. The desk has those wonderful features most folks are looking for, such as all-wood drawers with dovetail corners, and clawed feet. The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around 60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. This doesn't mean that you can't close them or lock them when closed, but it is something I should point out. Above the bookcase is decorative trim with a twin swan&#

These are hand made with sold wood, solid wood drawers. Skeleton key. Lock is stage 2, marked SC&S. Please see pictures for details. We are not experts in the field of antiques so not comfortable giving an exact date on these pieces but based on other similar pieces with similar lock markings believe them to be late 19th century to early 20th. Inside are two adjustable wooden shelves with a shelf depth of 9″ Just below the bookcase section is the secretaire. This pull out drawer has a drop down front which opens up to reveal a leather surface and divided storage area. The surface area of the desk is 31″ wide x 11.5″ deep and it is 30″ from the floor. Under the desk is large cabinet section hidden by two stunning flame mahogany doors. There is one removable shelf inside. The entire piece sits raised on bracket feet. The bookcase doors. Secretaire drawer, and cabinet doors all lock with the same key. This bookcase breaks down into two pieces(top and bottom) for easier moving. It has the 2 nails that hold it down when it is pulled down that my son broke. He pressed to hard on it and the nails broke through. PROBABLY CHERRY WOOD- DOVE TAIL DRAWS. But the rest is in good condition. I have the key for the top and the rest of the piece is like a dresser so you could use only as a dresser if you do not want to repair.
