1603 (1573) Ortelius WALES Cambriae Typus, Llwyd's "Deathbed Map", Decorative!
Cambriae Typus 50 cm x 37.5 cm copperplate engraving. 55 cm x 44 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Antwerp, Jan Baptist Vrients, engraved 1573, printed 1603 We are pleased to offer this scarce original map of Wales(Van der Krogt 5500:31) from the 1603 Latin edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius(1527-1598) The first true atlas in the modern sense. Notable as the first printed map to show Wales as a separate region, the map extends from Dublin and the Irish coast well past Liverpool and Bristol into England. Drawing upon the 1564 wall map of Gerard Mercator. The map was drawn in manuscript and sent to Ortelius by his friend the Welsh physician, philologist and humanist(Also spelled Lhuyd. 1527-1568) literally from his deathbed. In a poignant letter to Ortelius from 3 August 1568 Lhuyd wrote"before I returned home ... morefrom London I caught a most dangerous fever which has made me doubt of my recovery. But neither fever nor the prospect of death were able to efface the remembrance of my Ortelius from my troubled brain. I therefore send you my map of Wales. Not completed in all its details but faithfully drawn provided certain safeguards are observed, which I wrote down dying. Accept therefore the last remembrance of your Humphrey. From Denbigh in Gwynedd or North Wales. Tuus et Vivens et Moriens(yours in life and death) The result of this striking correspondence was this elegantly composed and scholarly map of Wales- one of the more interesting maps of the entire Theatrum. Wonderfully decorative with elegant calligraphy. A fine sea monster and a handsome ship, this well preserved example exhibits hand colour work of the very highest order and will make an outstanding presentation if matted and framed. A handsome title cartouche credits Llwyd as author of the map while a beautifully engraved ship(note detailed rigging) sails near the Lleyn(Lhyn) peninsula: A twin spouted sea monster swims off the coast near Abergwaun(Fishguard) note trilingual naming of the Irish Sea: To get a sense

BLAEU WALES BRECKNOCKSHIRE BRECONSHIRE BRECON original antique map c.1670
A copper-engraved map of the Welsh county of Breconshire by Johannes Blaeu. Published in Amsterdam in c.1660. The map which has later hand colouring is centred on the town of Brecon‘Brecknoke’ and has a decorative title cartouche and scale of miles as well as the British Royal coat of arms and the coronet and feathers of the Prince of Wales. The map measures approximately 500mm x 380mm with generous margins beyond and latin text verso. The condition of the sheet is excellent but buyers should be aware that there is slight toning along the centrefold, occasional light smudging of the colouring in places and there is what appears to be a light ink stain running across the right part of the sheet, presumably due to an error at the time of printing(see photograph) The map remains attractive but is priced accordingly. Offers considered.

One of his earliest engraved works Britannia Depicta, published in 1720 contained over two hundred road maps together with a miniature county map of each of the counties of England and Wales. It was an unusual feature of the atlas that the maps were engraved on both sides of each page, and this resulted in a handier sized book. He also issued with John Owen a book of road maps based, as was usual at the time, on Ogilby but again incorporating his own style of historical and heraldic detail. Inspite of his royal appointments and apparent prosperity he died in poverty and his son, who carried on the business was no more fortunate and died in a Clerkenwell workhouse in 1790.

c1695 Britannia Romana Hand Coloured Map By Robert Morden
c1695 Hand Coloured Map Of"Britannia" By Robert Morden An early map of Britain c1695 by the famous cartographer Robert Morden(c1650-1703) which has been hand coloured. Robert Morden(c.1650-1703) was a British bookseller. Publisher, and maker of maps and globes. He was among the first successful commercial map makers. Between about 1675 and his death in 1703, he was based under the sign of the Atlas at premises in Cornhill and New Cheapside, London. His catographical output was large and varied. His best known maps are those of English counties first published in a new edition of Camden's"Britannia" in 1695, and subsequently reissued in 1722, 1753 and 1772. These maps were based on new information from gentlemen of each county, and were newly engraved. Each had a decorated cartouche, and showed numerous place names. ... moreMorden also produced in 1701 a series of smaller county maps often known as Miniature Mordens. In 1695 he published a map of Scotland. It is in parts(e.g. Skye and the Western Isles) essentially a copy of the 1654 map done by Robert Gordon of Straloch, published by Blaeu; other parts show evidence of more accurate cartography. He is also known for several very rare early maps of theBritish colonies of North America which are now among the earliest and most sought after maps for collectors of old American maps. He also produced a series of miniature maps of the world, which appeared in both playing card format and in a series of atlases, including his Atlas Terrestris and Geography Anatomiz'd, beginning in 1687. The frame has a length of 47.5cm, a height of 40.5cm. The map is in a good condition for its age, though does have some oxidisation marks.
