Dated 1860 Sheet measures 12.5" x 15" Samuel Augustus ... moreMitchell(March 20. 1792- December 20, 1868) Senior began his map publishing career in the early 1830s. Having worked as a school teacher, Mitchell was frustrated with the low quality and inaccuracy of school texts of the period. His first maps were an attempt to rectify this problem. In the next 20 years Mitchell would become the most prominent American map publisher of the mid-19th century. Mitchell worked with prominent engravers J. H. Young, H. S. Tanner, and H. N. Burroughs before attaining the full copyright on his maps in 1847. In 1849 Mitchell teamed up with printer Cowperthwait& Company to produce the Mitchell's Universal Atlas and the Mitchell's General Atlas. In the late 1850s most of the Mitchell copyrights were bought by Desilver and Co. who continued to publish his maps, many with modified borders and color schemes, until Mitchell's son, Samuel Augustus Mitchell Junior. Entered the picture. S.A. Mitchell Jr. purchased most of the copyrights back from Desilver and, from 1860 on, published his own New General Atlas. It is from Morse and Gaston's Diamond Atlas. Published in New York by Samuel Gaston. 1857. A facsimile copy of the title page will also be included for authenticity. It is by Samuel Gaston and Sidney Morse, the brother of Samuel Morse, the inventor of the telegraph. Their father was Jedidiah Morse, also a mapmaker and publisher in New York. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed, being sold as a single sheet as seen in the pic. Overall, a nice antique miniature map that would frame up nicely! Size: The map image measures approximately 5 by 6 inches(12x15cm) on a 6 by 7 1/4" 15x18cm) page with a margin all around for framing as seen in the pic. Condition: The map is in Very Good condition for its age with overall tonal aging and original hand coloring as issued. There are a few minor spots around the margin as seen in the pics. Dated 1860 Sheet measures 12.5" x 15" Samuel Augustus ... moreMitchell(March 20. 1792- December 20, 1868) Senior began his map publishing career in the early 1830s. Having worked as a school teacher, Mitchell was frustrated with the low quality and inaccuracy of school texts of the period. His first maps were an attempt to rectify this problem. In the next 20 years Mitchell would become the most prominent American map publisher of the mid-19th century. Mitchell worked with prominent engravers J. H. Young, H. S. Tanner, and H. N. Burroughs before attaining the full copyright on his maps in 1847. In 1849 Mitchell teamed up with printer Cowperthwait& Company to produce the Mitchell's Universal Atlas and the Mitchell's General Atlas. In the late 1850s most of the Mitchell copyrights were bought by Desilver and Co. who continued to publish his maps, many with modified borders and color schemes, until Mitchell's son, Samuel Augustus Mitchell Junior. Entered the picture. S.A. Mitchell Jr. purchased most of the copyrights back from Desilver and, from 1860 on, published his own New General Atlas. The younger Mitchell became as prominent as his father and published atlases well into the late 1880s. Fine condition on great paper. Housed in mylar. See photo.

The map is 7and1/2 ins high and 5 ins wide. and at the bottom written in fine old style handwriting is a little bit of information regarding the county of Merioneth. I do not know its age but looking at the paper.The colours and the handwriting I would say that it is a genuine antique map of Merioethshire. The map has been freshly reframed and mounted. ~ Robert Morden ~ Robert Morden(c.1650-1703) was a British bookseller. Publisher, and maker of maps and globes. He was among the first successful commercial map makers. Between about 1675 and his death in 1703, he was based under the sign of the Atlas at premises in Cornhill and New Cheapside, London. His catographical output was large and varied. His best known maps are those of English counties first published in a new edition of Camden's"Britannia" in 1695, and subsequently reissued in 1722, 1753 and 1772. These maps were based on new information from gentlemen of each county, and were newly engraved. ... moreEach had a decorated cartouche, and showed numerous place names. Morden also produced in 1701 a series of smaller county maps often known as Miniature Mordens. In 1695 he published a map of Scotland. It is framed(not glued down) The frame is about 21 3/4 x 27" The visible map is about 15 1/2 x 20 1/2" Excellent condition- I bought it framed. So I don't know what the paper edges look like. The visible map is in excellent condition. Published in London by John Sudbury and George Humble 1610. Title cartouche with royal arms. Two inset town plans of Caernarvon and Bangor. Nice dark contemporary hand-colour. Small neat repair to sail of ship. See before and after photos above and below. Small hole repaired with paper fragment from a similar map held by archival repair tape and hand painted with watercolour. Slight browning to right margin of the map. Atlas Novus" which eventually ran to 12 volumes and was published in several languages from 1635- 1662. John Rocque was a surveyor and cartographer. The son of French Huguenot's who came to England in 1709. In addition to his work as surveyor and mapmaker. Rocque was an engraver and map-seller. Rocque is now mainly remembered for his map of London. He began work on this in 1737 and it was published in 24 printed sheets in 1747. It was by far the most detailed map of London published up to that time, and remains an important historical resource. The map of London and his other maps brought him an appointment as cartographer to the Prince of Wales in 1751. A fire in 1750 destroyed his premises and stock.
