1720 Very Decorative Bowen Road Map - Cardigan, Wales
1720 Bowen Road Map- Cardiganshire Emanuel Bowen was one of the most influential of English cartographers during the early to mid-1700's. However his popularity with publishers failed to provide him with a comfortable living and he ended his days in the poorhouse. His first published atlas'Britannia Depicta' is also his best-known. He reduced the famous road atlas of John Ogilby to a smaller size and included a series of county maps. These strip road maps were extremely popular with travellers and the atlas went through many editions. This elegant map from the first edition of 1720 is typical of the series. The map follows the road through Cardiganshire. There are many decorative details. Showing the small towns and villages, churches, the coast, hills, rivers, that an 18th century traveller would pass by along the route. It has various keys and scales at the bottom. The map measures when closed 5.5 inches by 3.5 inches, when open it measures 21.5 inches by 16.25 inches. Published 1898.

The son of French Huguenot's who came to England in 1709. In addition to his work as surveyor and mapmaker. Rocque was an engraver and map-seller. Rocque is now mainly remembered for his map of London. He began work on this in 1737 and it was published in 24 printed sheets in 1747. It was by far the most detailed map of London published up to that time, and remains an important historical resource. The map of London and his other maps brought him an appointment as cartographer to the Prince of Wales in 1751. A fire in 1750 destroyed his premises and stock. Up for bid is this Attractive map of the country of Pembrokeshire in UK by J. Blaeu. From a Dutch edition of"Atlas Maior" in beautiful colour. With 13 coats of arms. One cartouche and two sailing ships. Dutch text on verso. Cartograph: Willem Janszoon Blaeu(1571- 1638) Title: Penbrochia Comitatus et Comitatus Caermaridunum Year: Amsterdam. Circa 1648 Frame Size: 19.25 x 24 inches Willem Janszoon Blaeu was born 1571 in Alkmaar. He was trained from 1594 to 1596 by the famous danish astronomer Tycho Brahe. 1599 he went to Amsterdam and founded a business as globe maker. Later he started producing map and sea charts. Including his first world map in 1605. In 1633 he was appointed Hydrographer for the Dutch East India Company(VOC) His most famous work was the"Atlas Novus" or"Theatrum Orbis Terrarum sive Atlas Novus" ... moreof 1635, which was published until 1655 in total six volumes. After Blaeu's death in 1638 his sons Joan and Cornelis continued the businees and finished the"Atlas Novus" and started an even larger work, the"Atlas Maior" which reached 12 volumes. In 1672 a fire destroyed the printing house and a year later Joan died. Some of the surviving plates where bought by F. de Wit and Schenk& Valk. The business was closed finally in 1695. John Speed, Caernarvon, Original Antique Map of Caernarvonshire
Caernarvon both Shyre and Shire-towne with the ancient Citie Bangor described. Delightful copper-engraved map with old hand colouring. Insets showing plans of Caernarvon(with the castle of course) and Bangor(quite big in those days; Sudbury/Humble edition with English text to the verso. Engraved area measures approx 51cm x 39cm with a vertical centrefold as issued. The map is in good condition. Very clean and decorative. Lovely. Extensive colouring and a clear impression. Evenly and attractively toned; a few patches of faint browning but very minor impact; no significant foxing. Some nicely done repairs down the left edge; there has been a very good repair to the left bottom corner with the very tip of the printed border redrawn and painted; also the top left corner has been torn and repaired at some stage. The biggest condition issue is ... morevertical creasing on both sides of the map just less than halfway from the centrefold to the sides. I also think the map has been trimmed and while there are good margins on the map side, on the verso the top of the text is quite close to the edge. One or two tiny holes but only really visible when held to the light. Some edge damage with some small tears and tiny chips, nothing affecting the engraved area; 3 small remnants of mounting tape along the verso top edge. I will send the map rolled in a posting tube. 1720 "Britannia Depicta" - 273 Original Bowen Road Maps - Complete First Edition
A complete First Edition of Emanuel Bowen's"Britannia Depicta" comprising 273 strip road maps. Printed back to back, published in London by Thomas Bowles in 1720. This popular pocket-sized publication covered all of the principal roads of England and Wales for the horse and rider with every mile marked along the way and all of the landmarks noted- churches. Houses, windmills, streams and uphill/downhill topography(downhills are identified by upside-down hills) Interesting notes about towns, such as market days, are added to the sides. Each strip has its own compass rose to help guide the traveller. All of the maps are in remarkably good. Bright condition with no foxing or staining. The last three maps have very minor worm holes in the margins only. One map(20) has been overlain with what looks like a facsimile(see yellowish ... more11 th. scan) but on closer investigation it appears to be a rough manuscript copy or draft- the 12 th. scan shows map#20 in final form from another copy I possess(very mysterious! To clarify Map#20 is present and may be in perfect shape but is covered from view. Original worn leather binding with front cover loose but still attached. Binding generally tight but spine is opening between maps 132 and 133(see scan) Ownership script on front covers- see scan. 1859, North & South Wales, Black’s Atlas, Large Antique Map
A really lovely double-page map published in the 1859 edition of Black’s General Atlas Of The World. Very detailed. Both in terms of settlement and relief. The sheet measures approx 44cm x 62cm with a horizontal fold as issued. Condition is good. The map itself is clean and bright. A few small marks and some faint brown spotting. But very minor; a small amount of soft creasing. There is some dust and handling soiling in the margins; there is a closed tear from the right edge that reaches 2cm into the printed area and one end of the centrefold has a small split. Verso blank and clean. The map will be posted rolled in a wide-diameter posting tube. Unfortunately the tube will have to be longer than 45cm so first class postage is £5.65 plus £1.10 for the tube. A birds eye view of Denbigh is included, along with a legend detailing the important places of the town. The map is also embellished with Coats of Arms relating to the county, and a wonderful illustration of Poseidon with his trident, riding a horse in the sea to the north.
