VERY RARE ORIGINAL MAP to be acquired by serious collectors of maps and charts of Wales(Some foxing commensurate with age) Approx Size: 24cm X 17cm BACKGROUND: In 1729 Lewis Morris was appointed as'Searcher and Customs Officer' to Beaumaris and Holyhead. After receiving permission from the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to survey the coast from Llandudno he started with a waywiser in July 1737. This preliminary work lasted 76 days for which he was paid nineteen pounds. It was a further two years before a suitable vessel was provided by the Admiralty so that Morris could take soundings. ... moreIt was another 9 years before the work was ready for publication and because of Admiralty delay Lewis Morris decided to publish the small volume of 25 charts himself in 1748. 1645 Blaeu Map Monmouthshire Wales Antique Old Genuine UK Latin Print Engraving
Monumethensis Comitatus Vernacule Monmouth Shire. A superb County map by Joan Blaeu. Guaranteed genuine, first issued in 1645- 8 in the IVth volume of the"Atlas Novus" with editions to 1672. There were no further editions of the Atlas as the plates were destroyed in a disastrous fire in that year. Blaeu's workmanship is generally acknowledged to be of the finest quality. And this is evident in this lovely map. A decorative item, with 2 coats-of-arms, 2 pictorial cartouches, the Prince of Wales's Feathers, and beautifully engraved detail: the mountains as"mole-hills" each town depicted depending on its size, and parkland and forests marked, whether private or wild. All in a variety of calligraphy. Size: The sheet is 60cms x 50cms. The map image 50cms x 38cms. Condition: The map is in very good condition. It has ... moreprobably been restored at some point. And verso the text has been covered in a very thin tissue for added strength. But the Latin text is still visible. Some of the handcolouring looks to be original, but there may have been some touching-up more recently. The effect is a very attractive original Blaeu map, with strong platemark, centrefold as issued on strong laid paper. I have other such antique maps in my shop. Including more by Blaeu. Please see my other items. Free postage within the UK. I will send worldwide. £10.00 to the USA etc.

Old Tudor map of Monmouthshire & Monmouth, Wales: 1610: John Speed
This is a copy of a map of Monmouthshire by John Speed and was initially printed in the 1600's. It was taken(very carefully! from the book"The Counties of Britain. A Tudor Atlas by John Speed" which was printed in 1988. The map has been printed in colour on 2 pages of good quality paper. It measures 40cm x 30cm and would look lovely framed. As well as the map of Monmouthshire there is a map of Monmouth. On the rear of the map is some information about the county which describes the history and geography as it was in the 1600's. Speed’s Atlas was the first to show all the counties of Britain with towns. Villages and boundaries as they were at the time as they were at the time of Elizabeth I. With the first known‘aerial’ maps of towns, illustrations of battles, portraits of royalty, it is an elaborate work of art. Please ask ... moreif you have any questions or want more information. I have lots of other maps from the same book and will combine postage prices if you wish to buy any others. Thank you
