The Raid on Dieppe- Operation Jubilee RAF cover JS50 cover produced for the 50th Anniversary of The Raid on Dieppe codenamed Operation Jubilee which took place on 18/19th August 1942. Cover depicts the Essex Scottish under enfilade fire on the Dieppe main beach on 19th August 1942. Spitfire VBs attacking JU88s iver Pourville and the destroyers HMS Calpe and HMS Fernie attacking German positions in Dieppe. Cover bears 24p defin stamp cancelled with BFPS 2311 for the 50th Anniversary of the Dieppe Raid. Cover has been flown in Aerospatial Tampico from Biggin Hill to Dieppe and then along the beaches at Dieppe where early in the morning of 19th August 1942 the massacre at Dieppe took place and then across the Channel retracing the route taken by the survivors during that afternoon and then onto Biggin Hill. In April 1942 planning began for a ... moreraid on a French Channel port with the intention of boosting morale at home and reassuring Britain's hard-pressed Russian and American Allies. The plan was codenamed Rutter and was developed as an attack by a force of 60000 largely Canadiam on a ten mile front of the French Coast centred on the port of Dieppe. Specialised training was pushed ahead in Scotland and on the Isle of Wight. The date chosen for Operation Rutter was July 7th 1942 but in the end bad weather caused it to be cancelled. By the end of the month the raid was revived under the codename Jubilee. This time it was to be a reconnaissance in force on a strongly defended sector of coast to discover what resistance would have to be met in the endeavour to seize a port. The forces were mainly Canadian most of whom had been inactive in England since 1940. The 2nd Canadian Division which was complete on the Isle of Wight would be the backbone of the force of just over 6100 soldiers including 50 US Rangers and approximately 1000 officers and med of No 3 No4 and the Royal Marine Commandos. A Rare Antique Victorian Era Elaborately Hand Carved Dieppe Floral Belt Buckle(Dieppe.France Circa 1850) The craftsmanship is extraordinary! The detail of each flower and leaf is simply amazing. Each flower is intricately carved. T are dogwood. Roses, daisies, peonies, and lovely foliage or leaves, you can even see the veins of the leaves. This piece appears to be in a very good condition for its age. It is truly spectacular. Unusual, and one of a kind! Approximate dimensions are 3" 7.7cm) almost 1.5" 3.5cm) The metal at the back looks like silver but it is not tested I believe this piece was made in Dieppe. From the crown of thorns down to the the toes. The remarkable skill presented in this museum-quality sculpture is impressive. The Christ figure is carved from three pieces of precious"noble" material as the french like to delicately put it(body + 2 arms) and measures 10 cm vertically from head to toe by 9 cm horizontally from the fingertips. The ebony or black-wood cross. Typical of the Napoleon III period(mid to late 19th century) is mounted on a spectacular base and measures 31 x 12.5 cm. The carving has developed a lovely. Rich patina over the years and remarkably, all fingers and toes are present and the crown appears to be complete, as well. Vintage Dieppe nautical souvenir w/glass inkwell and vintage thermometer
Hello. Up for auction is a vintage nautical seashell souvenir from Dieppe. France. Overall good condition, and very funky. This may have been a souvenir that was made locally, or someone put the items together to remember their trip. All is encased in what looks like plaster.there is a glass lidded inkwell, a plastic anchor shaped thermometer(which does work.looks like a mercury type glass thermometer attached to the plastic anchor) and there are various seashells including the conch shell that has"Dieppe" on it(it is a seaside town in France) I cleaned up the thermometer a bit so as to see it better.pic#9 below) It is glass and it is attached to a brass back piece with the degree markers on it.this is all separate(or would be. from the plastic anchor. The anchor with the thermometer are attached with some wire, and it does come ... moreoff, but is secure if just sitting there.not loose. There are a few points of the larger seashell that are broken off at the tips and there is a fair amount of rust on the lid of the glass inkwell. antique Dieppe carved japanese chinese fan silk leaf painted with cranes + lace
a beautiful antique fan. Probably japanese! the sticks are deeply carved.even on reverse side! see pictures) The center sticks and the left guard stick are in mint condition but to the right guard stick there are 2 breaks. These had been glued and so there is no loss at least! after removing the(very) old glue it will be possible to replace and repair without noticing the difference. The special thing about this fan is that the 2 guard sticks(both original to the fan) have a slightly different design: same ground pattern. But flowers for the first, and birds for the second! Originally these birds had little glass inserts for their eyes(one remaining) The leaf is made of strong silk gauze but still has some breaks on several folds. Silk on paper, is painted: 1 side in colour with wisteria, peonies and birds, the other in shades of grey, with women and a child in a landscape. The leaf is in good condition with no major damage(see pictures) The nice shiny guard sticks are decorated with Shibayama hardstone inlay of cranes and branches.
