The box,which is empty,could have been made to hold a relic or other religious object. The condition is excellent,although the box is tarnished. In addition to having exquisite mosaic work, it also slides open to reveal a compartment for relics. It opens by unscrewing the loop at the top of the cross.There are two holes in the mosaic where a crucifix was most likely attached at one time. This is a vintage Catholic Reliquary Crucifix with cloth relics of various saints. Including one of Pope Pius X, in very good condition. It’s metal with black wood inserts behind the Christ Figure. The metal. Wood, Figure and Titulus Crucis(INRI plaque above Figure) all show ware consistent with its age. There are numerous tiny hairline scratches thoughout the surface. They may not all be noticeable in the photos due to the reflective surface. Also some tarnish and tiny nicks. Inside are relics of six individuals under paper labels. Around these are decorative gold-gilt paper“buttons” as well as beads and paste“stones” in clear and red, mounted in the same type of gilt bezels as the relics. These are all visible in the photos so please look closely as the photos are part of the description. The backing material behind it all is a red cloth. In the center is a scalloped-edge bezel, gold-gilt paper, filled with wax. There may have been something stuck on top of the wax at some time but it is now missing. The screw that holds the Crucifix closed at the bottom is a little bent(see photo) but it doesn’t interfere with screwing/unscrewing it. It is unmarked. Most of these. True Cross Relic Reliquary set in Baroque circa 1690-1710 Silver Case
The Most Holy Wood of the Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ set in an antique Baroque Sterling Silver Case with rare glass back. The case being circa 1690-1710. The wax seal and tamper proof threads are unbroken and present. There are two splinters of the cross set in a larger gold thread cross. The cross is surrounded by gold threads woven into a pattern to fill the case on hand woven red cloth which serves as the overall background. The cross wood is set on a very fine hand woven white textile. Likely linen. The overall red background textile has faded over time as the cross relic was placed in the case and sealed over 300 years ago. The cross is set on a gold thread embroidered hill. Most likely this piece was worn often at some time during history as the case design and top findings are for a chain. Another indication of this being worn ... moreis the rare glass backing so that the seal is visible at all times whenever it would be turned over. The sterling silver case measures 2 5/8” inches high by 1 5/16” inches wide. The silver is fully tested and is.925 Sterling. The silver has a fine old patina that comes from age. The case was lightly cleaned to maintain its distinct look. The glass is hand cut and hand beveled at the edge. The front glass is in great condition. The back side glass has stress cracks in it. The glass is still solid and well though it has the cracks. Fine piece for gentle wearing or for an altar. I have owned with piece for over 20 years and it has given me great comfort. The owner before me acquired it I believe in the late 1940’s or early 1950’s. I got it as the center piece of a well loved collection of other relics from his estate. 1800's SILVER CROSS RELIQUARY. HEAVILY INSCRIBED. INLAID WITH GOLD. This cross had been handed down for many years. The initials on the front had been changed at least twice(from"M.E. to"P.E. to R.E. and numerous initials as well as one full name appear inscribed on the back. One of the previous owners had inscribed"1940" on the front. The inner area is inlaid with gold to provide respected accommodation for the religious relic inside. This item had passed through many hands. Still wearable. Silver. 7.5g, 34mm

IT SEEMS THERE IS CONFUSION AS TO THE ORIGINS OF THIS TYPE OF CROSS IN PARTICULAR THE GEOMETRIC INLAID PEARL DECORATION SHOWS STRONG STYLISTIC SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE MIDDLE EAST AND THE INDIAN SUB-CONTINENT. IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN THAT THESE PIECES WERE EARLY PILGRIMAGE SOUVENIRS PRODUCED IN JERUSALEM BY SYRIAN CRAFTSMAN UNDER THE DIRECTION OF FRANCISCAN MONKS. THE DECORATIVE SYMBOLOGY USED ... moreDOES IN FACT RELATE TO SYMBOLS POPULARISED WITHIN THE FRANCISCAN ORDER. THIS VERY EARLY EXAMPLE IS MOST LIKELY MADE OF CARVED OLIVE WOOD AND AS IT ALSO FUNCTIONS AS A RELIC HOLDER IT IS POSSIBLE IT ONCE HAD OR STILL HAS A FRAGMENT OF THE TRUE CROSS WITHIN IT. UNFORTUNATELY I AM UNABLE TO OPEN ALL OF THE SLIDING MECHANISMS THAT ARE INCORPORATED INTO BOTH THE VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL BEAMS OF THE CROSS. THESE SLIDING MECHANISMS WERE SPECIFICALLY MADE TO ACCOMMODATE RELICS. THE RELIC BOX BELOW WHICH IS ALSO THE SUPPORT OF THE CROSS IS EMPTY. FOR A SIMILAR CRUCIFIX. FOR ALMOST IDENTICAL CRUCIFIX RECORDED AS SOLD AT CHRISTIE'S AS LOT 160- PLEASE REFER TO: Sale 22 April 2008 New York. THERE ARE SOME LOSSES TO THE MOTHER OF PEARL INLAY THE MOST NOTICEABLE IS THE INRI BANNER. THE HORIZONTAL BEAM IS MISSING ONE OF THE THREE CIRCULAR FORM TERMINALS. TWO OF THE THREE ROUND CYLINDRICAL DOWL FEET THAT SUPPORT THE RELIC BOX BASE ARE REPLACEMENTS. AND I SUSPECT THERE WERE FOUR ADDITIONAL SMALL TERMINALS LOCATED ON THE VERTICAL BEAM THAT ARE
