A NOTE UP FRONT: This Blue and White Stoneware Doe with Fawn Pitcher was made by J.W. McCoy Pottery Co. Roseville, Ohio, 1899 to 1910, and, later, by Brush-McCoy Pottery Co, Roseville, Ohio, 1911 to 1923. It is illustrated in every J.W. McCoy and Brush-McCoy pottery product catalog of that period. These McCoy potteries rarely applied much of a description or name to these early blue& white pieces. They were usually simply described with a product item number and as"Blue Tint. In the 1800's and early 1900's dozens of potteries. Including the McCoy potteries, were producing stoneware from clay dug from the abundant beds in and around the Great Ohio Valley. These potteries produced a huge variety of kitchen and other utilitarian stoneware pieces which were essentially the Rubber-Maid or TupperWare of their day. Each pottery produced thousands of pieces each month and there was money to be had in volume. Quality control was second to mass production and as a result a number of manufacture errors were typically released to the public.
