EARLY AMERICAN FOLK POTTERY by Harold F. Guilland. Chilton Book Co. NY, 1971. Here are the utensils our forebears used– the pots. Plates, jars, beakers, ... morepitchers, bowls, crocks– and the information on how they were made and designed. The author’s] detailed descriptions of the pottery– size, color, design, where made– and the excellent photographs make this the most valuable and comprehensive book that treats of the Colonial earthenware and stoneware tradition, American design and methods and changes from the use of earthenware in 1640 to the time of stoneware, 1700-1880, when the customs and the ensuing needs of American life altered and even the manners and mores of the time reflected in the pottery. Valuable information about techniques and processes are enlarged with examples of how the ordinary adjuncts of everyday life fit into the picture. The decoration of a plate or keg often told a story, such as the decoration on a keg which symbolized the high quality of Holland gin which had the‘bite’ of a swordfish or the‘sting’ of a swarm of angry bees! The profuse illustrations, in-depth captions, and rich narrative combine to make this rare book a leading reference on the subject of antique American pottery and stoneware. 7.4” s 10.5” hardback with dust cover in very good condition(dust cover has several puzzle-piece edge chips) 322 pages. On his appointment in January 1863, at the age of 65, Smith was the oldest Confederate general to hold field command in the war. He requested a commission and was appointed colonel of the 49th Virginia Infantry regiment just three days before the First Battle of Bull Run, where the regiment and new commander performed well. Smith served in the Confederate Congress in 1862, but returned to the 49th Virginia at the start of the Peninsula Campaign. He was wounded at the Battle of Seven Pines and his regiment received favorable notice in his commander's report. During the Seven Days Battles the regiment was lightly engaged, but he and his command again were described as having"characteristic coolne

EPITAPH BROWN BROTHERS HUNTINGTON LONG ISLAND NY 4 GALLON STONEWARE CROCK RARE
This is a wonderful RARE 1800'S ANTIQUE 1868 BROWN BROTHERS HUNTINGTON LONG ISLAND. NY 4 GALLON CROCK. The crock is in excellent condition except for a stress fracture that goes all the way down the side and has another fork that goes to one side. The crock weighs over 15 pounds and is 11 7/8" in diameter and 10 1/4" high. There is also a small stress fracture that I did not notice on the rim but noticed it in the pictures. The crock is embossed with"Brown Brothers Huntington L.I. 4 Huntington Makes The Best" I found a note in the crock that states"This#4 Huntington stone wear piece was put under roof(above third floor) probably when first bathroom installed in 19th cent. Discovered with other pieces in July 1993 by Louise, Ted and Jean) datch 177 Riverside Av, Riverside, CT 07878" Another piece of paper ... morestated"Discovered under roof of 177 Riverside Ave probably when 1st bathroom was put in circa 1875 by E.D. Hurlbut" There was also two papers describing the history of Huntington Pottery: The Brown Brother Years. The article states that the crocks with the epitaphs are the most desirable. Most of the ones found are all different. I could not find one with"Huntington Makes the Best" I will double box this gem. Email me with any questions.
Old Hansen's Stoneware Crock Jug Little Falls NY Dairy Milk Farm Advertising
Please check my other items. I always have a nice variety of old things I am finding in my area. Old Hansen's Laboratories Stoneware Jug Little Falls NY Dairy Milk Farm This would look great in any advertising collection! From the 1930's or before. From what information I can find on the internet the extract that was originally sold in this jug was used as an ingredient additive to dairy milk for making butter and cheese. Fair condition. No cracks. But a couple of bottom edge chips and about 4" of top edge roughness(see closeups) Blue stenciling is very clear for the age. The slanted brown area on top has an impressed"Ag" on it. These are not easy to find. Size reference: approximately 11" tall x 6-7/8" diameter and weighs over 5 pounds. If you live close enough to Lafayette. Indiana you can arrange for local ... morepickup by calling 765-477-0324. Shipped USPS. Automatic confirmed delivery tracking in USPS and ebay.
Riedinger & Caire 2-Gal Crock Jug, ca 1857-78, Poughkeepsie NY, Misspelled!
For auction: 2-Gallon crock jug with cobalt blue bird-on-branch decoration and a stamped'2' Made by Riedinger& Caire Pottery in Poughkeepsie, NY, circa 1857-1878. Measurements: 14 inches high 9 inches in diameter at the bottom An interesting mistake occurred during the manufacturing of this jug: Poughkeepsie is misspelled as'Pough p ee k sie. There are obvious condition problems as photos clearly show. Please observe: chip in jug lip inch-wide hole on front. To right of bird; doesn't go through to inside small hole left of bird. Likely a glaze pop 2 hairline cracks on handle crack starts under lip. Goes under handle and extends about 4 inches around top of neck In spite of these flaws the jug is solid and strong. I don't believe the handle has ever been broken. It just has hairlines. And although I'm careful NOT ... moreto carry it by the handle, I think it could be done. Please ask questions before bidding.
