Rare antique whiskey or cider jug from Caproni Bros. Providence, Rhode Island. Dates to the very early 1900’s. Salt glazed with nice blue accents from ... morecobalt oxide. This was a utilitarian jug and it’s nice to see it preserved in such good condition. Does have a small fleabite chip on the spout… and does look a little like the drunken sailor’s jug due to production. (It has a slight list to the right on the top.) But, this just adds to the charm of such a nice early piece. Stamped clearly and has no other issues. Measures 10” tall and approximately 5.5” wide.

This is a very old and primitive-looking(not perfectly round. But slightly oblong in shape and the clay is slightly lumpy) 19th century 3 gallon salt ... moreglazed crock with bold cobalt leaf designs. It is sturdy, solid, and has a molded handle both sides. Due to age, the color of the clay has a slightly patchy appearance from discoloration. One of the handles has a few small flakes, but there are no other chips on the crock. There are three short cracks on the top edge that don't go all the way through the clay and look like they might be splits from firing. One very fine unnoticeable hairline on the top edge is slightly visible inside and out and is probably a true hairline from damage, but it is very difficult to see. All cracks are shown in the photos. There are two yellow streaks in the glaze on the front, also shown in the photos. They are part of the glaze and happened during manufacture. The crock measures 11" in diameter x 10 3/4" H. It will be packed securely in a double box and insured during shipping.

Up close and personal in your hands this is a fantastic piece of very early Blue and White stoneware designed and intended for every day use! A NOTE UP FRONT: This Blue and White Stoneware Doe with Fawn Pitcher was made by J.W. McCoy Pottery Co. Roseville, Ohio, 1899 to 1910, and, later, by Brush-McCoy Pottery Co, Roseville, Ohio, 1911 to 1923. It is illustrated in every J.W. McCoy and Brush-McCoy pottery product catalog of that period. These McCoy potteries rarely applied much of a description or name to these early blue& white pieces. They were usually simply described with a product item number and as"Blue Tint. In the 1800's and early 1900's dozens of potteries. Including the McCoy potteries, were producing stoneware from clay dug from the abundant beds in and around the Great Ohio Valley. These potteries produced a huge variety of kitchen and other utilitarian stoneware pieces which were essentially the Rubber-Maid or TupperWare of their day. Each pottery produced thousands of pieces each month and there was money to be had in volume. Quality control was second to mass production and as a result a number of manufacture errors were typically released to the public. Common errors include glaze skips; drips from excessive color or glazes; bubbles. Pinpoint sized pops(caused from minute air bubbles caught in the slip/greenware as the piece was being created) blowouts, blisters, and kiln-kisses in the glaze; slight color differences between lids and bottoms(lids and bottoms were formed, colored, glazed, a
