Antique Vintage Hand Painted 1800s Wood Sign "Boarding House"
This sign was found mounted to a wall as a shelf in an old Galena. Illinois house. It is painted both sides but one side is soiled/stained/dirty from being used as a shelf. I have not attempted ANY cleaning of the sign, it is just as I found it. There are screw holes from the wall brackets when I removed it, and a couple small nails. The curved edge looks like the wood might have been trimmed but there is still some original paint there. Size of the sign is 8 1/2" x 36" Look at the pictures to judge condition. Considering the age of the building it was found in and the history of Galena, the sign probably dates from the 1850s to 1890s. Shipping by USPS, US sales only.

Quite a rare find! We have an original wood double sided sign dating from the 1880's that came from an old Bankey's Coffee shop located what is now the Pilsen neighborhood in Chicago. The piece was stored in the basement for many years and we carefully stabilized the piece and gave it a light cleaning. Entire piece is made of wood and the gold letters really pop. Signs of painting through the years and very nice weathering from hanging outside for many years add to the rustic character of the piece. The black background is a gritty paint mix of paint and sand to help weather proof the wood and add a nice rich background for the gold painted wood letters that are carved from single pieces of wood-pretty amazing. It has been beautifully and expertly hand painted with an image of two frogs- one is climbing through the weeds on the side of a pond, the other is just pulling itself out of the water. Vintage Carnival Game Concession Sign Letter S Painted Wood (read details)
Only the letter is included in this auction. Not the old ride. Just wanted to give you an idea where they came from. The letters are 12 inches high and 8 inches wide and about 1/2 inch thick wood. They each have a metal eyelet that was used to hang the letters on a board. Doing it this way they could change the sign without making a new one. The carnival was operated thoughout the southeast and midsouth from the late 50's through the 60's. The letters were in barrels and boxes and as you can see have suffered some abuse. Some are white. Some are blue, some are red, but all are scraped up and look like they have been painted several times over the years. I looked up the address and it's now shared between a trendy restaurant/ club and a design company. This is an architectural treat. Perfect design for loft decor or to add that little bit of Parisienne chic to any maison. The back is stencilled with the number'561' in the old French style. The base, which has a hole in the middle to attach it firmly in place, measures 1 ½” thick by 7 ½” wide by 9 ¼” across the front. Overall the height to the top of the risqué lady’s head is 34 ¼” This well endowed lady is wearing a skin tight bathing suit and green socks. In the 19 th century this would be considered quite risqué and I’m sure this statue would not be advertising bathing suits. The clue to her original purpose is in her hands. Each hand holds a 1 ¼” diameter by 2 ¼” tall cup with no bottom. It has been suggested that this is a Cigar Store Trade Sign and that she held several cigars in each hand. Another friend thought it might be Circus related. She may have been holding something with more weight than cigars as both arms have been repaired at the shoulder with thin iron bands. Vintage Carnival Game Concession Sign Letters Painted Wood HOPE
This fair/carnival outfit ran an average of 6 concessions at each event. Usually working 4-5 events at the same time across NC, SC,GA andFL. Their home base was near Fayetteville NC. The operation started in the late 50's and ran until the late 70's when they sold out. Many of the letters and signs are beyond use. However, the letters and signs you see listed have been cleaned with an organic mixture that removes any dirt, mildew or mold. Most were stored in a metal trailer and if you have ever been to NC in the summer you know the intense heat and humidity they have been xposed to inside the trailer. Thus, the poor condition of the paint. Only the letter is included in this auction. Not the old ride. Just wanted to give you an idea where they came from. The letters are 12 inches high and 8 inches wide and about 1/2 inch thick wood. ... moreThey each have a metal eyelet that was used to hang the letters on a board. Doing it this way they could change the sign without making a new one. The carnival was operated thoughout the southeast and midsouth from the late 50's through the 60's. The letters were in barrels and boxes and as you can see have suffered some abuse. Some are white. Some are blue, some are red, but all are scraped up and look like they have been painted several times over the years.
