This is a stunning and rare work of art! It is like the antique rosenkranzes I have from Germany. The metal is all filigree. Very fine, very small. It is signed Detler, which is a German surname. I believe the filigree is bronze(the support metal) and silver(the fine intricate details) and the center is bronze. It shows a mother holding her child over the church holy font to be baptized. The priest is baptizing the child, while one altar boy kneels with a holy candle, and another holds the Bible. A woman is standing behind the mother holding a cloth in which to take the child in. It is just incredibly beautiful and rare. I have not seen one this large in all my years in Catholic antiques. The entire icon is a diameter of 4 3/8" and the inside is 2" in diameter. Religious icon or sacraments box incredible hammered metal large cabinet 35"tall
Unbelievable piece. I got it in an estate sale a few weeks ago from some very well traveled people. Total height 35 inches to top of cross. 15 inches across the front 12 inches deep. Door has glass in it. Drawer is some type of felt lined as is the interior of the cabinet is made of I guess wood covered in hammered tin and copper. Probably must have been hand made. I have no idea the age or where it came from. Cross unscrews from the steeple for shipping. All I can say is wow. I was the second person in the sale and grabbed it quickly. It has 4 small plastic feet on the bottom I guess so it doesn't scratch furniture. It is fairly heavy. Again I have no idea on age or whereabouts it came from as the owner passed on. The Icon of the Mother of God of Kazan made its apparition on 1579 at Kazan the capital of Tartar Khaganat recently captured by the Russians. The iconography subject is closely associated with a Greek icon of the Hodigitria Mother of God. By this Icon young people are blessed at the altar. The feasts were established on 22 October(5 November) and 8(21) July. This Russian Orthodox Icon was painted by a modern professional church artist at the Russian town Rybinsk(not far from Moscow) that is one of the main and old centers of the Russian icon painting. The icon was painted on a very old(probably 18 century) wooden board with the shrine i.e. the rectangular hollow at the middle part designed for the image. The margins are above the hollow.
