RARE RUSSIAN 1850s ST.NIL CARVED WOOD PLAQUE. Size 4 3/6 by 7 1/8" Very good condition. Saint Nil was tonsured a monk in 1505 at St. Sabbas of Krypetsk Monastery near Pskov. After 10 years. He left the monastery for solitude outside of the city of Ostashkova by the Seremi River. He did battle with the demons and prevailed through prayer and asceticism. Many from that region started to come to him for advice and instruction. He asked God to lead him to a quieter place where he would not be constantly interrupted in his prayers. He heard a voice telling him to go to Stolobnoye Island in Lake Seliger. He moved there in 1528 and dug out a small cave in the hill on the middle of the island. Later, he built a hut. He continued to do battle with the devil and his demons. This led them to prompt someone to set fire to the dense woods on the ... moreisland, but the flames went out miraculously when they reached the saint's hill. Once, a band of robbers came to the island. Nil told them, All my treasure is in the corner of the cell. They went to search there for money, but all that was there was an icon of the Theotokos. They became blind, and begged for forgiveness with tears of repentance. St. Nil ministered to them. At the proper time, St. Nil was told to prepare for his death. He dug a grave. An igumen from a nearby monastery visited him to bring him the Eucharist. St. Nil communed, censed the icons in his cell and prayed, then surrendered his soul to the Lord on December 7, 1554. A monastery was established on the island, named for St. Nil. It had a wooden church built over the grave of the saint. In 1667, it was decided to tear down the wooden church and replace it with one out of stone. On May 27, they were digging for the foundation, and the earth gave way to reveal St. Nil's uncorrupt remains. They were translated to the church of the Theotokos of the Sign in Ostashkova. 19th century-Circa 1800s ANTIQUE RUSSIAN PRIMITIVE FOLK ART SIGNED ICON SAINT NICHOLAS TEMPERA on WOOD& EMBOSSED HAND-HAMMERED TIN RELIC. Wonderful signed in two places-19th century antique primitive Russian icon religious relic of Saint Nicholas. It is signed on the back with a faded but legible hand-written Russian ink inscription-I cannot read Russian but date of person owning it or gifting it or church ownership is dated on the back and reads"1896" please see inscription and date on back of wood block. It also has a stamped/embossed into the metal/tin at side signature of maker which is a bit faded but reads something like"CH" or"CR" with maybe a backwards"R" hard to see) and the number"84" with a round stellar'star' shape next to the number, I have included a close-up pic ... moreof this embossed signature as well-please see close-up pic provided. This antique Russian Icon relic is from the 1800s and consists of what looks to be tempera on wood block which is in very good aged period condition(see pics provided) An icon of Saint Nicholas holding a scroll with white beard and hair and raised relief of painted Russian crosses(see pics) the wood block is wrapped in a metal or tin sheet which is embossed& hand-hammered with Archaic religious symbols of Russian crosses, a halo around the saint's head and a robe-the halo shroud has hand-hammered details of little beading work around the perimeter of the halo and the robe(see close-up pics provided) There are also hand-hammered dots which spell out Russian letters which I cannot read as I do not read Russian-please see close-ups provided of the Russian hand-hammered words on front at sides of the Saint figure. The antique icon measures approx. 3.75" tall x 3" wide and is in very good original condition for age with no repairs or repaint.
