It is one of the most venerated Orthodox icons and a fine and early example of the iconography of the Eleusa type. The Theotokos(Greek for Virgin Mary. Literally meaning"Birth-Giver of God" is regarded as the holy protectress of Russia. The icon is displayed in the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow in a former church in the grounds of the museum. Antique Religious Military Jesus Pocket Shrine Icon Brass Case Soldier WW1 Era
Up for auction is a very old vintage. Antique, religious Sacred Heart of Jesus miniature pocket shine in a brass case. It is very rare. The small brass case slides open to reveal the fully detailed Sacred Heart of Jesus icon that appears to be made out of a cast metal- most likely, lead. It is a very dark silver metal. The icon measures just a little over 1" in height when the case is closed. These miniature pocket shrines are often associated with Catholic soldiers who carried them for protection during war times. These pocket shrines are incredibly difficult to find and are truly a rare treasure. I have seen these before with St. Joseph, St. Anthony, and Mary but never one with a statue of Jesus. PLEASE NOTE that the statue of Jesus is damaged on the base. I really didn't even notice this until I looked at it today. Wow. This is a one of a kind. Hand painted oil painting on velum or parchment of the Virgin Mary, baby Jesus and the Angel Gabriel. It is in a hand carved and painted wooden frame with Ave Maria carved onto it. It measures 6" x 4 1/2" The back is covered in blue silk and it can be hung on a wall or can stand in a table or alter. This artwork was part of a French Archbishop's estate. He was well known for his extensive relic and religious artwork. A short biography will be promised to the new owner. This is an extremely rare antique late 18th century bronze religious picture frame which was once displayed in a church. it is very well made from thick bronze which has a beautiful gold gilded and silver-plated finish. the finial is a very ornate crucifix surrounded by nice detailing all done in high relief. it has a wooden insert that was add red later and if the buyer wants i would be happy to cut glass for it free of charge. the opening measure 10 1/4 by 15 3/4 inches. RARE ANTIQUE RUSSIAN 1850s MONASTIC SAINT NIL CARVED WOOD ICON statue
RARE RUSSIAN 1850s ST.NIL CARVED WOOD STATUE. Height 8.5" Very good condition. Saint Nil was tonsured a monk in 1505 at St. Sabbas of Krypetsk Monastery near Pskov. After 10 years. He left the monastery for solitude outside of the city of Ostashkova by the Seremi River. He did battle with the demons and prevailed through prayer and asceticism. Many from that region started to come to him for advice and instruction. He asked God to lead him to a quieter place where he would not be constantly interrupted in his prayers. He heard a voice telling him to go to Stolobnoye Island in Lake Seliger. He moved there in 1528 and dug out a small cave in the hill on the middle of the island. Later, he built a hut. He continued to do battle with the devil and his demons. This led them to prompt someone to set fire to the dense woods on the island, but ... morethe flames went out miraculously when they reached the saint's hill. Once, a band of robbers came to the island. Nil told them, All my treasure is in the corner of the cell. They went to search there for money, but all that was there was an icon of the Theotokos. They became blind, and begged for forgiveness with tears of repentance. St. Nil ministered to them. At the proper time, St. Nil was told to prepare for his death. He dug a grave. An igumen from a nearby monastery visited him to bring him the Eucharist. St. Nil communed, censed the icons in his cell and prayed, then surrendered his soul to the Lord on December 7, 1554. A monastery was established on the island, named for St. Nil. It had a wooden church built over the grave of the saint. In 1667, it was decided to tear down the wooden church and replace it with one out of stone. On May 27, they were digging for the foundation, and the earth gave way to reveal St. Nil's uncorrupt remains. They were translated to the church of the Theotokos of the Sign in Ostashkova. A noted writer, poet and Church figure. In 717, Byzantine Emperor Leo the Isaurian decided to destroy Saint John by defaming him in the eyes of the Prince of Damascus. To this end, Leo commissioned a skilful scribe to forge a letter, ostensibly sent to him by Saint John, with a proposal to capture the inadequately fortified city of Damascus and forwarded that letter to the Prince. The Prince believed the Emperor's libel and ordered to cut off ... moreSaint John's hand and exhibit it in the city's main square as a warning to other traitors. Some time later, the Prince took pity on Saint John and gave him his cut-off hand back.
