Of oval form, the first plaque depicting Iverskaya Mother of God(Virgin Mary& Christ Child) the second plaque depicting Jesus Christ with Globus cruciger. The icons painted on metal and set beneath embossed and pierced silver oklad with bronze finish and set within conformingly shaped silver frames with hanging rings. The lower edge of the silver oklad stamped with maker's mark(possibly"AP" and combined Russian city, date and standard hallmark(with St. George Slaying Dragon for Moscow, 1883" and"84" the edge of each frame similarly marked. Dimensions: Framed Icons(excluding rings) 3.5" high x 2.875" wide ... morex 0.2" deep(89cm x 73cm x 6cm) Total Weight: 3.14 oz. 88.9g) Condition: There is some wear/crazing to the varnish along the surface of each painting which seems to have yellowed over time. There are light abrasions to the surface and edges of the silver frames and oklad. With some oxidation/wear to the bronze finish/patina. There are slight bends to each oklad and a series of small holes to the surface suggest mounting pins holding the painting in place are missing(or detached) The hanging rings are bent and the velvet-lined backing panels appear to have been reversed. Antique 19th Century Russian Icon Christ Pantocrator with Saints at His Feet
This is an antique icon. Russian in origin, from a private collection. It portrays Christ as the Teacher, the book open to scripture, with two Saints supplicant by his feet. The feet themselves are highly detailed. The robes, in red and black and gold, delicately draped. The book of scripture is held with a cloth, showing reverence for the word. The right hand of Christ is raised. Christ is elevated slightly on a platform, and the fingers of the Saints are highly detailed as well. Faces are rubbed, and all but obliterated by those who have touched them. This Icon dates circa 1830. On the rear, the original blade marks for cutting the wood for the icon are plainly seen. One of the stretch bars, installed to keep the icon from bending, is missing. There are worm holes, and losses to be expected on an item like this.
