The icon has the original patina by the oxidation of the old varnish, and it is generally very well preserved.very few damages in the margins of the icon, It is a typical icon of Christ that belongs to the Central-Northern Greek school of iconography of the mid 1th century in which there are very typical the vivid colors. Blue background- typical for the icons of Northern Greece first half- mid 19th century. Also the other colors that have been used for the dresses of Christ are very vivid, the green or the red while the hallo of Christ on the cross shape of the inscriptions has been used a very light orange color that emphasizes the Inscriptions.Also a very nice element of this icon is the gold in poder that has been used as color in the margins of the green dress of Christ.On the hallo as always in the byzantine icons of Christ there are written these inscriptions because icon is considered for the orthodox church as book in colors and it has didactic meaning. Also on the hallo of Christ there are written the Greek letters' Ο ΩΝ' that mean' I am who I am' the name of God when he was revealed to Moses and it is always written on the hallo of Christ in order to express that the God of the New testament is the same with God of old Testament. Antique 19th Century Russian Icon Christ Pantocrator with Saints at His Feet
This is an antique icon. Russian in origin, from a private collection. It portrays Christ as the Teacher, the book open to scripture, with two Saints supplicant by his feet. The feet themselves are highly detailed. The robes, in red and black and gold, delicately draped. The book of scripture is held with a cloth, showing reverence for the word. The right hand of Christ is raised. Christ is elevated slightly on a platform, and the fingers of the Saints are highly detailed as well. Faces are rubbed, and all but obliterated by those who have touched them. This Icon dates circa 1830. On the rear, the original blade marks for cutting the wood for the icon are plainly seen. One of the stretch bars, installed to keep the icon from bending, is missing. There are worm holes, and losses to be expected on an item like this.
