В рукописных«Сказаниях о Тихвинской иконе Богоматери» Наиболее ранние из которых датируются рубежом XV—XVI вв. ее появление в новгородских пределах относится к 1383 г. RARE ANTIQUE RUSSIAN 1850s MONASTIC SAINT NIL CARVED WOOD ICON statue
RARE RUSSIAN 1850s ST.NIL CARVED WOOD STATUE. Height 8.5" Very good condition. Saint Nil was tonsured a monk in 1505 at St. Sabbas of Krypetsk Monastery near Pskov. After 10 years. He left the monastery for solitude outside of the city of Ostashkova by the Seremi River. He did battle with the demons and prevailed through prayer and asceticism. Many from that region started to come to him for advice and instruction. He asked God to lead him to a quieter place where he would not be constantly interrupted in his prayers. He heard a voice telling him to go to Stolobnoye Island in Lake Seliger. He moved there in 1528 and dug out a small cave in the hill on the middle of the island. Later, he built a hut. He continued to do battle with the devil and his demons. This led them to prompt someone to set fire to the dense woods on the island, but ... morethe flames went out miraculously when they reached the saint's hill. Once, a band of robbers came to the island. Nil told them, All my treasure is in the corner of the cell. They went to search there for money, but all that was there was an icon of the Theotokos. They became blind, and begged for forgiveness with tears of repentance. St. Nil ministered to them. At the proper time, St. Nil was told to prepare for his death. He dug a grave. An igumen from a nearby monastery visited him to bring him the Eucharist. St. Nil communed, censed the icons in his cell and prayed, then surrendered his soul to the Lord on December 7, 1554. A monastery was established on the island, named for St. Nil. It had a wooden church built over the grave of the saint. In 1667, it was decided to tear down the wooden church and replace it with one out of stone. On May 27, they were digging for the foundation, and the earth gave way to reveal St. Nil's uncorrupt remains. They were translated to the church of the Theotokos of the Sign in Ostashkova. RARE RUSSIAN 1850s ST.NIL CARVED WOOD PLAQUE. Size 4 3/6 by 7 1/8" Very good condition. Saint Nil was tonsured a monk in 1505 at St. Sabbas of Krypetsk Monastery near Pskov. After 10 years. He left the monastery for solitude outside of the city of Ostashkova by the Seremi River. He did battle with the demons and prevailed through prayer and asceticism. Many from that region started to come to him for advice and instruction. He asked God to lead him to a quieter place where he would not be constantly interrupted in his prayers. He heard a voice telling him to go to Stolobnoye Island in Lake Seliger. He moved there in 1528 and dug out a small cave in the hill on the middle of the island. Later, he built a hut. He continued to do battle with the devil and his demons. This led them to prompt someone to set fire to the dense woods on the ... moreisland, but the flames went out miraculously when they reached the saint's hill. Once, a band of robbers came to the island. Nil told them, All my treasure is in the corner of the cell. They went to search there for money, but all that was there was an icon of the Theotokos. They became blind, and begged for forgiveness with tears of repentance. St. Nil ministered to them. At the proper time, St. Nil was told to prepare for his death. He dug a grave. An igumen from a nearby monastery visited him to bring him the Eucharist. St. Nil communed, censed the icons in his cell and prayed, then surrendered his soul to the Lord on December 7, 1554. A monastery was established on the island, named for St. Nil. It had a wooden church built over the grave of the saint. In 1667, it was decided to tear down the wooden church and replace it with one out of stone. On May 27, they were digging for the foundation, and the earth gave way to reveal St. Nil's uncorrupt remains. They were translated to the church of the Theotokos of the Sign in Ostashkova. VARNISH AGE:SECOND HALF OF 19TH CENTURY PROVENANCE:SOUTHERN RUSSIA This is a veray rare and authentic 100% antique russian icon of saint John the baptist. Dated around 1870-1890, probably from southern Russia or Ucraine. The icon is very well preserved, it has not been cleaned or restored, it is 100 authentic and contains the authentic varnish which gives a very nice light yellow oxidised patina. It depicts the beheading of Saint John the Baptist in jail and in the corner we see Salome the princess who is waiting to take the head in order to offer it it her mother. An Early 19th century original icon from the Russian Orthodox School. The icon was a family owned relic. Stored and preserved inside a private art-safe for more than a century. It was purchased by relatives of mine for over a half a century ago as a collectible addition to a series of icons from the same school; conditioned and stored in a private art-safe as well. The icon is examined and certified by the Experts' Comity at the Bulgarian National Archaeological Gallery and I do have the certificate. TECHNIQUE: Made of bronze and 4 colors enamels SIZE: 3.6 x 2.7 cm ICON' SUBJECT: This composition. Also known as the Sudarium and the Saviour Uncreated-by-human-hands, is inspired by the legend of the miraculous transference of Christ’s countenance onto a piece of cloth which He used to wipe his face. This image, uncreated by human hands, was said to have been sent by Christ himself to Augarus, king of Edessa. In Edessa Augarus attached the cloth to a“board which did not decompose” and placed it in a niche made for it above the gates of the city. For some time the cloth was covered with a tile and the image miraculously imprinted itself on this piece of ceramic as well, so that there were now two images uncreated by human hands– ... moreon cloth and on tile. Legend tells us that these images were brought to Constantinople, and they were reproduced in great numbers in Byzantium and the Slavonic countries. Both types of Vernicle can be found in medieval Russian art from the twelfth century onwards.
