I took the liberty to copy this from the wonderful'Gazeteer of Lock& Key Makers' There probably could be an epic film made about the'goings on' in the cut throat business of Safe's and Locks! George Price would certainly be a main protagonist! page 3 Demonstrations of resistance to fire In 1854. George set up his first public demonstration of the fire-resistance of his safes. Public demonstrations were supposed to prove that manufacturers' claims and advertisements were true. George gives an account in his Treatise of this first demonstration, which he asked a Milner's foreman to assist him in setting up. Soon after taking over the business of which I am now proprietor. Relying on the statements of other makers as well as on the assurances of a person in my employ, as to the fire-resisting ... morecapabilities of safes made fire-proof by the use of a simple non-conductor(which activated the production of steam to preserve the contents) I had a public test of two safes made on this principle and invited my friends and fellow townsmen to be present a the trial. One safe was in an intense fire for three hours. And the other for five hours- Mr. Milner's foreman and his agent and lock manufacturer in Wolverhampton were present and assisting me. The contents comprised books, bound in leather, loose papers and a parchment deed. United States National Bank 1913, vintage large heavy brass plaque . 35lbs
this auction is for an old large brass plaque engraved“United States National Bank” established in 1913. 20 inches diameter. Pretty heavy, 35 pounds. At the edge is almost ¾” thick, actual thickness in section is approx. 11mm. The relief on the letters is about 2mm high. Nice conditions overall, it does not show any big dents or dings. There is a darker spot on the brass at top right side. Right in the middle there is a lock( the key is missing) I have no idea where this sign was originally located at the Bank when it was installed. Heavy Antique metal name plaque with 'CASTANEA'in enamel. Brass / Bronze /Copper
PLEASE NOTE-all items sold are Antique/Vintage and used-whilst I try and describe condition to the best of my ability all items are used and sold as such. Heavy Antique metal name plaque with'CASTANEA'in enamel. Brass/ Bronze/Copper? I assume this is a House name? At first I thought the lettering was sprayed on but on close examination it is enamelled- the lettering must be cut into metal and yellow enamel applied flush with surface. S' has some damage/ roughness to top and a couple of other letters have minor wear at edge showing where enamel meets edge. The raised rim/ border is screwed on. Very good quality item. I am not 100% sure what metal it is- it has tarnished as shown with some ver-di-gris. All needs polishing/ cleaning- where I have given it a tiny scratch it looks like Copper and I have polished a tiny surface to rear ... morealso- again looks like Copper but once fully polished may be Brass. I would say 1920s/ 30s/ Art Deco Period. There is a little rough plaster to edge- may have been part of rendered wall? This can be stripped off. Sign is 41.5cm x 9cm and 7mm thich approx- weighs approx 1.170 Kg. Nice period item. Sold as shown POSTAGE UK £7.45. Europe- £12.75. Rest of World- £21.30. See other similar items listed.
