I took the liberty to copy this from the wonderful'Gazeteer of Lock& Key Makers' There probably could be an epic film made about the'goings on' in the cut throat business of Safe's and Locks! George Price would certainly be a main protagonist! page 3 Demonstrations of resistance to fire In 1854. George set up his first public demonstration of the fire-resistance of his safes. Public demonstrations were supposed to prove that manufacturers' claims and advertisements were true. George gives an account in his Treatise of this first demonstration, which he asked a Milner's foreman to assist him in setting up. Soon after taking over the business of which I am now proprietor. Relying on the statements of other makers as well as on the assurances of a person in my employ, as to the fire-resisting ... morecapabilities of safes made fire-proof by the use of a simple non-conductor(which activated the production of steam to preserve the contents) I had a public test of two safes made on this principle and invited my friends and fellow townsmen to be present a the trial. This is a VERY HEAVY bit of cast iron and cast alluminium by the look of it. that has been painted red. its been bolted onto something larger. the brackets are shaped and are good heavy cast magnetic metal. with a hole in either side. these are shaped brackets. the front is named MATHER& PLATT LTD.the front plaque sign is also cast.but is non magnetic indicating its an alloy.and is attached to the side brackets with 2 brass screws at either end. the left hand end has been under abit of pressure as its cracked the paintwork. I think the metal has bent.someone or someone driving a machine has been pulling on the bracket ... moreto create this BEND crack in the paintwork. you COULDNT do it by hand.so this front plate has the makers name on it. it has 4 brass screws into the side brackets. these are still in situ. the plaque is CIRCULAR shaped at the top. this is to take the BRASS GAUGE you see on it now. this is ONLY attached with 1 brass screw at the top. it does move about on the front. The gauge is glass fronted. says BOURDON COMPOUND GAUGE.MATHER& PLATT LTD MANCHESTER. in inches and pounds. with brass hand. Attached to the gauge is a brass pipe at the bottom with 3 other pipes INLET- FILTRATE- JETS.INLET 7 JETS have two small brass taps. these are solid and I dont want to touch them. abit of WD-40 will have these moving in no time I would imagine. these two pipes have red painted brass pipes attached as well. the centre one is BLOCKED off. The item is not only heavy its a weird shape and the point of balance is weird as well. and will be difficult to WRAP and send to you folks.so I would strongly advise you to COLLECT the item. if so its CASH ON COLLECTION ONLY. This is a nice old heavy shaped brass sign with the word MARIE in raised letters.It measures 5.4 inches across and is 1.75 inches top to bottom in the centre.It is in pretty reasonable condition with wear commensurate with age and use.It probably dates to about 1920-1930. United States National Bank 1913, vintage large heavy brass plaque . 35lbs
this auction is for an old large brass plaque engraved“United States National Bank” established in 1913. 20 inches diameter. Pretty heavy, 35 pounds. At the edge is almost ¾” thick, actual thickness in section is approx. 11mm. The relief on the letters is about 2mm high. Nice conditions overall, it does not show any big dents or dings. There is a darker spot on the brass at top right side. Right in the middle there is a lock( the key is missing) I have no idea where this sign was originally located at the Bank when it was installed.
