Yates Machine Co. The one time largest manufacturer of woodworking machinery. More than likely this sign is from the Berlin Machine Works Company. But it will certainly work for any town, city, business, street, or person named Berlin. This antique sign measures 16 ½” x 3 ¼” and weighs just over 3 lbs. The base of the sign is 1/8” thick and 3/8” thick at the lettering. There are 4 pre-drilled holes that measure 1/4” across. French house number 1 door gate plaque plate enamel steel metal wall ivory sign
It is made from vitreous enamel fused onto sheet steel. Very heavy gauge- unlike recent modern versions this one can't be bent easily. Very durable. Weighs a little under 200 grams or around 7 ounces. Made in 1990s. 4" high 6" wide. One of a batch of samples made in France for an industrial trade warehouse in French Alps. Perhaps they were submitting a tender. Estimate or quote to supply the local mayors' offices with street numbers for them to issue? Maybe the councils went for other suppliers, colours or materials. What a neat sign this is. I have collected signs of all types for many years. I bought this sign in about 1980 when some young entrepreneurs were opening a new antiques mall. They had rented this old hotel in Navasota. Texas and were getting the building ready to open. They were selling anything that wasn't permanently attached. This sign was hanging in the building so I bought it. I displayed it in my auction house for many years and now I no longer have a place for it. The top part measures 5-1/2 inches by 36 inches and the bottom part is 5-1/2 by 21 inches. It is painted on solid wooden boards that are 3/4 inch thick.
