ANTIQUE / VINTAGE HAND MADE WOODEN SLOOP SHIP - HMS ALACRITY - 1800s ?
I bought this model ship a few years ago. On a whim, I was just drawn to it, I brought it home intending to do some work on it(which didn’t happen! and it has sat in a cupboard until recently when I decided to have a clear out. I have been told that it could have been made by a French prisoner of war during the Napoleonic war. The real HMS Alacrity was a brig sloop built in Newcastle in 1806 and was broken up in 1822 and saw many a battle. But I don't really know if all this information is correct or not. But what I do know is that this old model ship is quite large measuring approximately 1’ 6” x 1’6” and is carved from one solid piece of wood with other bits and pieces added i.e. little metal guns and material sails. The ship will need some TLC as the masts are a bit wonky and will need gluing, some of the little metal guns are missing ... moreand the rigging needs repairing/replacing. It has a lovely feel and look to it which I can't quite describe. I hope the photos will give you an idea. I have put it on a makeshift stand that I have come across. I am afraid it is rather heavy so the P&P is quite high. I would really just like it to go to someone who could bring it back to life again. If bidding from abroad please ask for postage price.

The sign board like this piece is often given to the owner of newly open business or a shop as a gift with the prayer that the business will be full of customers. These sign boards are then often hung near the entrance of the establishment until the last day when the business finally closes. The inscription on the center of the frame reads"Gift" and the right side reads"from Pachinko Yuraku" and the left side reads"to Wakagiya. Pachinko is a mechanical game originally created as a recreational arcade game for kids in the 1920’s but later became a very popular gambling device for adults around the 1940’s. The nature of the business of Wakagiya is unknown. The inscription on the blue paper label on the lower left corner reads" Matsuzawa. Renjyaku, Sumitaya" and this is probably the name of the shop who made this signboard. Matsuzawa and Renjyaku is the name of the cities in Shizuoka Prefecture of Japan which may help to pinpoint from where in Japan this piece originated.
