This is Johann De Burgo's'Pupilla Oculi' an early work on the Sacraments of the Catholic Church, edited by Augustine Agge. Title with attractive red and black format, and text with scattered woodcut initials and grat black letter font. Great liturgical content, including a section on Exorcism. Potentially, this could be either the 1518, 1517, or 1514 edition, deduced from the distinctive foliation of the work. Sadly this copy lacks the lower portion of the title page/dedication leaf and the final 7 leaves which include the colophon. Bound in later brown buckram, this 4to contains a green morocco lettering poice, is letter/ruled and contains ... morenew EPs and bookplate. The contents meet collation: clxx, 8 ff] collation should read: clxx,15ff] we therefore lack the final seven leaves including colophon, as previously stated. WWII Canadian Soldier's Frontline Letter, Holland 1944. Black Watch of Canada
This is a very interesting original WWII Canadian soldier's letter. Written in Holland on the 12th of November, 1944, by a soldier in the Royal Highland Regiment(The Black Watch) of Canada, of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division. There is excellent content. This soldier explains that he had recently been wounded by shrapnel and had spent some time in hospital recovering. There is also content about the behavior of German S.S. troops on the battlefield. The soldier who wrote this letter served in combat as a stretcher bearer, and he was required to be unarmed. He explains that being unarmed could be quite unnerving at times, especially when facing S.S. troops, who would shoot at anyone: Yes. Stretcher bearing isn't too bad. It's a little tough on the nerves, sometimes, especially when there are S.S. troops around, as a stretcher ... morebearer doesn't carry any weapons and those_ would fire at their own mother for the fun of it. But it's like everything else, if you're going to get it, you're going to. That's about all there is to it. This soldier explains that he had recently been wounded by shrapnel. The wound itself had been small. But the impact had done some muscle damage, and his recovery had taken some time: Since last writing you I have travelled quite a distance. Went to hospital with a small shrapnel wound in the ankle. And then to convalescence depot. It was only a small wound, but the force of impact threw the muscles of my foot out of gear and it took a little while to get them back into shape. Had a leave at a rest camp and then returned to my unit. At the end of the letter this soldier states that it was a relief for a soldier to get away from the front lines for a rest or a leave: Well. There is no use getting morbid about things. When a fellow gets back for a rest or a leave there is always plenty to do. Movies and things. Apparently their was to be a ballgame between the Melrose WI baseball team and the Black River Falls WI team. But the Melrose Coach quit before the game. He did not tell the players and because they didn’t know Black River Falls showed up and they were not happy. Therefore this letter was written to Mr. Gorman in Mindoro WI who must have been the coach. The letter states they will have someone on hand. The letter reads. This included looking into old Black River Falls newspaper clippings from over 135 years ago to find out what exactly was going on to prompt this letter. It turned out rather interesting and was fun to solve a bit of a mystery from so long ago. I will of coarse include the copies she sent me of those newspaper clippings to the buyer. From those letters you can piece the story together. Also. I have included them in the(photos here on ebay so you can read them) These clippings were full of interesting early baseball information including some funny comments on why one team won over the other. The reporter said one team was made up of farmers and stronger men while the other team was made up of weaker younger men who had lazier jobs. Not worded just like that. The Bible has remained in amazing shape; minimal instances of soiling and browning throughout but nothing major.
