There is also a really neat measuring tool of some sort mounted in the box. This opens and closes by turning a key style handle. Also included is a shoe brush with bristles at one end and a pick on the back side of the brush. All the tools are in great condition. What I love about this piece is that it is a perfect size to use as a stool and display. It also is practical as it has a drawer in which you can store things in. The vintage fabric on top of the stool is sound and looks good. There is a crack in the wood on the uncarved side of the stool. The drawer knob has some of the edges worn/broken off but is sound. The hinges are in nice shape and there is even a lid stop/support. This is a wonderful piece of history and yet a practical piece to own. It stands about 16-1/4” tall. The stool top is about 14-1/2” by 12-7/8” I am not sure of the age but am guessing 1800’s. This is one of 2 Antique Elm Temple Benchs that were brought back from China several years ago. Made from driftwood found along the shore of the Korean Sea. This bench graced a temple swallowed by the 3 Gorges Dam. 2. Though similar, they are not identical; the 2nd one is listed separately. Each measures approximately 40" long, 30" tall at the post, and 24" wide at the seat. Quite heavy, I'd say about 250 lbs. American 18th Century Chippendale Period Mahogany Antique Stool Window Bench
Click for a slideshow of detailed pictures! American Chippendale Period Mahogany Stool Circa 1770-90. Probably New England This is an absolute treasure! Fully original and well preserved. This stool of the Chippendale period was probably crafted in the New England states as a companion for a Wingback Chair or other large arm chair of healthy proportions. With a tall height of 20" it would have been a companion to something with a thick upholstered seat in the 22-24" range. It is crafted with precision, using matched pine corner blocks nailed with four rose heads, a clearly successful mechanism as all are fully retained and the stool is incredibly sturdy. The rails of the stool tenon into the square legs, pinned at each corner and reinforced on a few corners with later(presumably) screws. The legs are plain and precise, chamfered ... morealong the back corner for visual appeal. The outermost corner of each leg has a single reed carved, and the rim around the slip seat is carefully molded. Each leg is stretched wonderfully with an H-form stretcher, the middle bar dovetailing into the side bars with tiny dovetails. This is a rare and wonderful find. Stools were not high-production pieces. Crafted infrequently for special chairs and clients, and as such are very difficult to acquire in good condition. We believe this to be an American work, noting the secondary wood used and the shape and form of the blocks. This is a piece you will cherish in your home and easily incorporate into such a vast number of design scenarios- it is flexible, moving from being the obvious choice in front of a large WIngback chair to the wall between two windows with some books piled upon it. Also, being the height of many diminutive chairs, it can rest in front of the Piano or dressing table very comfortably, and be fully functional as such. This is an absolutely gorgeous piece of furniture. Origin is most likely Germany. All we did was clean it with Antique Wax so it is as close to original condition as possible. There are benches and then there are benches. And then there is the bench. And it's a cracker. One of the nicest oak benches we've seen in a long time with just fabulous colour and patination. Just shy of six feet long. The 2 1/4" thick slab of oak stands over splayed and chamfered legs. The wear to the edges along the edges of the bench were many many pairs of legs have rubbed against it over the last two hundred and thirty years or so is a lovely feature. This antique English storage bench was crafted at some early point in the 18th Century. The craftsmanship is typical of the era, utilizing through tenons to join the majority of the frame, single and double pinning most joints with wooden pins with the back panels deeply chamfered on the back edges to rest in rabbet grooves in the stiles and horizontal braces. The seat has two lifting panels that allow items to be easily stored within(though the right side is lacking it's bottom boards) Rough and rugged with it's beautiful glowing patina. This is such a treasure for any French country style home or a classical Georgian interior. Retains a lot of it's original toe or hoof-shaped feet on bottom. This piece is coming fresh out of a nice estate that was filled with nice-quality antique items this past weekend. I assume it is probably an English stool. But uncertain of origin myself. Stool ... morehas a couple of age crack line down middle of top plank. Still a sturdy stool however. A chip off one of the shaped corners of apron on one end. Expected nice old wear to surface and edges.Some chips and losses to the bottom feet. Some wormholes around one of the bottom feet. Great old stool. INSURANCE INCLUDED in the shipping total.
