This is a stunning rare early 19th century gothic oak carving of a devilish gargoyle with a serpent's body and with shield. Dating c.1820's. Stunning and highly original oak carving. The devilish gargoyle head is wonderful- wide open mouth with fangs. Prominent nose and fine deep set eyes. Fangs have original white paint and tongue original red painted detail. From the head. The body- serpentine shaped- is carved in the form of a serpent with the tail being carved in form of leaves. To centre of body is a shield- retains original red painted detail.
