This is a hand carved wood Butter Mold Press which my wife can trace back to her great great great grandmother who was born in Florida around 1827. There is some minor chipping around the bottom due to age and use. The plunger still works although it is no longer a tight fit. The item is approximately 3 inches tall if sitting on a flat surface and about 1 5/8 inches in diameter at the base. The design appears to be a flower with 6 petals. I hope you enjoy it. Antique 1800s John S. Bullard Floral Print One-Pound Wooden (Maple) Butter Mold.
Typically made of select maple. This lathe-turned butter mold holds one pound of fresh butter. Found on small family farms throughout the country, freshly churned butter would be packed into these molds, extracted, packaged and chilled for eventual sale or personal use. This one is in very nice condition and has a beautifully aged dark golden colored patina. These molds were not finished with varnish or shellac and hence absorbed water and oil from the butter and as they aged and dried-out they had a tendency to crack. This one developed splits on both sides. These defects were repaired and the mold was cleaned and finished with several coats of MinWax Satin Varnish and polished with 000 steel wool and paste wax. By sealing it with varnish, that deterioration is stopped and the butter mold is preserved. This piece measures 3 3/4” tall by ... more4 3/4” in diameter. With the handle it’s 5 1/2” tall. The handle does not separate from the stamp. Stamp was hand-carved by the original craftsman. A very nice decorative item. Shipping weight approximately 2 lbs. No reserve! John S. Bullard was issued U.S. Patent 54.054 on this butter mold design on April 17, 1866. The company went out of business in 1895 due a lumber shortage and damage sustained from a flood. Antique Lancaster County Carved Pennsylvania butter print or cookie print
Great little antique wood primitive out of my collection. I picked this up locally a few years ago. It is dainty and I don't know if it was for butter or possibly cookies. Double sided. Hand carved. Measures 3 3/4" high, 2" wide and 1" thick. Edge wear and shrink cracks, see photo. Great Pennsylvania carved basket and flowers and a variation of the same theme on the other side with a cross hatched border. Interesting the two Star of David, Jewish symbols on the bottom.
