Showing on the front face a Jerusalem Cross design, carried by numerous crusaders in the ... moreholy land. The flat disc is@ 1 1/4 inches in diameter, condition is sound, there is no fatigue to the metal or cracking despite it being a ground find. The simple design on the front of the large and four smaller crosses has been stamped into it using a sharp edge, probably a small chisel. It has been very lightly cleaned so as the design is clear, there is surface pitting to the copper but it's quite shallow and doesn't affect the visibility of the design.On the reverse, in the centre is a mark that looks to be where a stud of some sort was once fastened. This could be a decorative mount from the harness of a knight or maybe from something like a leather purse. Lots of leather items were decorated with studding so you can't say for certain what it was used for 1000 years ago. It was found in the south west region of France by a detectorist who works in the Languedoc region, home to the Knights Templars in this era in history. It hasn't been overcleaned so still has a super patina to the surface. It would be pretty easy to convert this into a pendant if you wanted to turn it into an eye catching piece of ancient jewellery. The straight pin part of the brooch is a little bent, else there are no condition issues. The brooch as not been cleaned, so it might use a bit of polishing, but I will leave that to the new owner. This item is extremely ornate, with many tiny handmade silver pieces added to the front base around the stones. The back is beautiful and artfully etched in an all over pattern of scrolls, leaves and floral. The Cross weights 28.6 Grams. There is a small like oblong cartouche at the back top with 5 G or 5 S.Most likely the maker A little lower silver content then Sterling Silver; it is the Silver that is common in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The back is marked SIlver 900 to indicate it is made of Silver. Back Marked Jerusalem ~ Jordan below Silver ~ 900. Each of the 5 color jewels accent the piece beautifully and bring this Cross to an amazing level of beauty. The ornate Bail is attached at the top of the Cross. And is as ornately decorated as the front of the Cross. This Cross is ready for hanging onto a ribbon, lovely cord or chain. According to a jeweler the light purple stone is a Synthetic Colorchange Corrundom(Sapphire) This is an old piece that has been in the family for many years. It was purchased sometime in the 1950's when Jerusalem was partially in Jordan. No visible damage or imperfections that I can see.
